16 airmen killed. Awful.

I still haven't heard for sure what happened, which is probably by design.

I thought they had determined that cargo (military humvees) broke from their restraints and shifted on takeoff to the tail of the plane...?

no idea but you have to feel bad for the airmen lost in this.

You very well could be right. I may have just missed it.

I thought it was 7 civilian contractors en route to Dubai.Still sad about loss of life tho.
That's a 747,they use C-5 Galaxy aircrafts for military cargo.
Hmmmmm...

Yeah I saw a story on it where they had a CGI rendering of some humvees in cargo nets that snapped and they rolled backwards toward the tail. Pretty sure they said that's what happened. It looks plausible considering the plane just stops climbing like that.

That means someone must be held accountable then.
It's like military parachute riggers.
Every military parachute is rigged and signed by rigger.
If the parachute fails, the person assigned to put it together is in deep shit.
You do not cut corners when your job is a matter of life and death.

I guess you would have to determine if the cargo nets snapped because of a defect in the product or by human error in securing them. Good luck trying to determine that now.

Wow.

I was going to say it looked like the had too much weight but I would imagine a bunch of humvees acting as a giant sliding weight would get the job done.

Why wouldn't they have the brakes on just in case?

This humvee story doesn't make any sense.

They do. But at the angle the plane was initially gaining altitude, they would still slide. All it would take is for them to shift a little, and it would just continually get worse.

I guess I never realized how steep the climb is. Do military planes climb even faster than commercial airlines?

On military airbases during takeoff, all aircraft are required to make 'HOT' takeoffs and landings. This is a steep climb or decent upon takeoff / landing. If the wide underside of the plane caught any kind of high wind gust during this steep climb, that also could have caused an unsafe climb angle causing stall.

It wasn't humvees, but a few heavy armored MRAPs. Five of them weighing 27k lbs each.

EDIT: They also talk about the hot takeoff MetalHead is referring to.
