So since there likely isn’t going to be much of an off season am I right in saying that Dak’s deadline to get a deal done is July 15th? That’s the deadline for him to sign the franchise tag right?

I think that if they don’t get a deal worked out and Dak actually plays under the franchise tag in 2020, I don’t think he will be a member of the team in 2021.

He doesn't have to sign it at all. July 15 is the deadline for signing it, but he can sign a contract now or any time past the deadline. There's no reason for him to hurry.

He "allows" this team to do what it does best (run the ball) because they have a QB that can't pass the ball ... That's just code for "my QB can't throw the rock."

it's not code for anything - just a statement of fact - what Dak does to defenses is extend plays, giving you a shot at almost any 2nd / 3rd and long, that "allows" you to run the ball, because if you look at any RBs numbers, even the great, they can easily go 10 carries for 10 yards in a stretch.

he's a play action deep QB, that's the system and why he was drafted, here's reality:

Passing Touchdowns 4th
Yards per attempt 3rd
Interceptions 14th

that's passing the ball rather well - he's an above average NFL pocket passer and as good as they get out of the pocket

You keep digging up stats if it makes you feel better. I know better because I watch the game. I see the slow starts, the red zone inefficiency, and teams forcing Dak to beat them. It's the recipe for success against this team.

I think the "code" they're speaking of earlier is Dez's dog whistle; "They paid Romo even though he had a losing record" is code for, "They won't pay Dak because he's black!"

And knowing the reputation of Dez's representation, it wouldn't surprise me.

Jerry just came out and said they are prioritizing putting as much talent Dak as possible rather than focusing on getting a long term deal done...says it all

NFL legend Joe Theismann is confused. He doesn’t understand why Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys haven’t come to terms on a contract yet.

And after reading what Theismann said on the matter, he has a point.

Speaking with CBS Sports Radio, Theismann said he’d tell Prescott to “take the money” right now and stop dragging the process out.

“Dak Prescott’s situation confuses me a bit,” Theismann told JR SportBrief. “If I was advising Dak Prescott, I would say, ‘Take the money. The aggravation to go through, the unknowns if you happen to go through a year, the free agency – yes, they’ve committed a lot of money to Amari [Cooper]. Yes, they’ve committed a lot of money to Zeke. But that’s a lot of money. What are you looking for? Another couple million? You’re never going to see the last year of this contract anyway.’”

To Theismann’s point, the Cowboys have offered Prescott a ton of money based on the latest reports.

Furthermore, he’s correct about the last year of Prescott's contract. Stars these days rarely get to the end of any big deal. Contracts are restructured or extensions are worked out long before that milestone ever occurs.

Going into the issue a bit more during his interview with CBS Sports Radio, Theismann blasted the thought process of trying to hold out for a bit more money.

“What you really concern yourself with is the guarantee that you’re going to get,” he said. “So if he signs a five-year contract at $34 million, that’s $170 million and probably $115-20 of it is guaranteed. What, are you crazy? Are you really, really nuts? Has somebody got into your head and said, ‘It’s worth the risk of disrupting the football team? All the questions, all the pressures?’”

For what it’s worth, Theismann isn’t the only former NFL quarterback who has wondered if there might be trouble in Dallas without a long-term contract for Prescott.

Back to Theismann, the NFL legend took a swipe at Prescott to finish off his argument.

“You’re not a top-five quarterback in the National Football League,” Theismann said of Prescott. “You’re a good football player. You have the potential to be better, but what have you done?”

Theismann is spot on. The longer this drags out, the worse it is for Dak. Everyone but Dak knows he's not worth the money. Well, almost everyone except for the hardcore homers who just want to be entertained on Sundays.

I tend to think both of these are more a reflection on the epic bad coaching than just mediocre to bad play from the QB alone.

Linehan was guilty of some of the same garbage in the redzone as well, many times blatantly ignoring the obvious (run the ball in) to try and get cute and fool people. I also think there's been a big issue with how bad the redzone passing game system was designed itself. Too many "run to the tree and turn around" routes down there, nothing that really floods zones or creates space.

I think we're going to see a pretty dramatic improvement in redzone efficiency and probably eliminate a lot of the epic slow starts we have seen under Garrett year over year.

I've said the same thing since last year when they started talking long term deal with him, Prescott has been getting horrible advice. He should have signed the deal that was presented to him a year ago.
