I was thinking us having a young team might be the cause of us having some of the issues we have.

But then I was shocked at how "old" of a team we really seem to have. This isn't the entire 53 man roster, and theres actually a lot of names excluded. But here is a list of guys who I feel are almost locks to be on the team next year, barring unforseen releases.

Offense

Age when season starts:

33 - Tony Romo
31 - Nate Livings
31 - Jason Witten
30 - Ryan Cook
30 - Lawrence Vickers
29 - Doug Free
29 - Miles Austin
27 - Mackenzie Bernadeau
27 - Jeremy Parnell
26 - Phil Costa
26 - Dwayne Harris
25 - DeMarco Murray
24 - Dez Bryant
22 - Tyron Smith

Defense

Age when season starts:

32 - Jay Ratliff
31 - Jason Hatcher
31 - Demarcus Ware
30 - Marcus Spears
30 - Gerald Sensabaugh
29 - Anthony Spencer
27 - Dan Connor
27 - Sean Lee
27 - Brandon Carr
26 - Sean Lissemore
26 - Orlando Scandrick
25 - Barry Church
24 - Bruce Carter
24 - Kyle Wilbur
24 - Matt Johnson
23 - eTyron Crawford
23 - Morris Claiborne

One thing I was disappointed in when we drafted Lee. I think he was 25 when he came out

Hard to believe Romo is the oldest guy on the team... Guess he just has a youthful vibe.

I don't see Ratliff, Austin, or Sensabaugh being on the team next year.

Spencer is 50/50.

Sturm nailed this back in November.

http://sturminator.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-morning-after-cowboys-23-browns-20.html

It is, however, another indictment on the continuing failures of this current front office. I am sure when the 2012 season ends, like the secondary last spring, we will hear how fixing the offensive line in 2013 is the top priority. And they will use many of their resources to attempt to do just that. But, why it takes years for them to see things that are obvious to those watching their games remains a mystery.

Then, if it is fixed, the shell game of personnel fixes will move to another department of the squad that will be overdue for renovations, too. These are the effects of too many mistakes over the years in the personnel department. The holes out-number the plugs, and before long, you have issues that cannot be addressed because you are out of picks and cap space.

This team is OK at drafting high in the draft, but struggles to get contributors all the way through the draft.

I think they also struggle to evaluate their own talent. I think they tend to overrate their own which results in bad contracts which result in cuts down the line and dead money on the cap. It is an endless cycle.

This team probably needs both lines reworked, another RB, an upgrade at S, another pass rusher and could use another receiver and/or TE. You aren't doing that all in one offseason with 6 draft picks and no cap room. So, what happens? You fill some holes, meanwhile, Romo, Ware, Witten, etc. get another year older without anyone in the pipeline to replace them. It is like running up a hill of gravel with this team.

On the Lunch Break they're hinting at Ratliff all of a sudden having a very bad attitude. They think it was Josh Brent cutting into his playing time.

Or it could be they asked him to move to DE.

This shit isn't rocket science. Any person with a modicum of football intelligence knows that you can't just focus on one area of the team to improve in any offseason. Special teams draft, we need a kick returner... whoops, now we need an OL, draft Tyron Smith and sign some FAs... Now it's the secondary, sign and draft some CBs... wait the OL is bad again. Now we have bad depth at LB, and DL. And what do we do if Murray gets hurt again. Our WRs can't stay healthy.

It's like the Hoover Dam is springing leaks, and Jerry has enough ability to put duct tape over one hole per year. By the time he gets to the next hole, the first one is leaking again.

That said all it takes is one draft to change things. It doesn't happen often and takes more luck than skill but you can do it.

Although it is easy to go point out all the holes on this team, a good draft and a good FA period could shore up a lot of the deficiencies. It'd also help if we had some young guys in the wings that were about to make the next step as contributors. The only guy I feel real good about doing that is Dwayne Harris. Maybe Hanna.
