Yeah, it's pretty fucking stupid. There was a thread at CZ about how there was less "kill, kill, kill" going on this year.

Defenses know what they are showing pre-snap.

What if they disguised a particular front in hopes of inducing a "kill, kill, kill" call only to be playing a defense that is setup to to defend the opposite of what they are showing?

Hello? Dom Capers said what they saw Dallas do on tape is exactly what they do in the game. Ray Lewis said the same. When Clay Matthews was teeing off on Romo on the game where Wade was fired, Dom said they (Dallas offense) just kept doing the same thing every time Green Bay lined up a certain way so they just kept sending Matthews.

This is the problem with this scheme and why no coach in his right mind would not call clock-ransoming running plays when you have the lead, your defense is injured and tired and your running back is getting 7 yards per carry. The reason is, yes Pep and Hoof, the defense dictates the plays and yes, they have all watched the tape and can trigger Dallas to move from run to pass.

That is the scheme. Safeties move. Plays move.

Think about how many times Dallas passes on 3rd and 1? Why is that? Because they are clever and unusual? No.

Pep and Hoof, if you had an offense that thrived on Ray Rice getting 20+ carries per game, why would you not give him the ball 20 times a game? Cam Cameron did not, and he was fired. Jim Caldwell took over and just called basic run and pass plays without the "if then" conditions that Norv Turners scheme had and they went to the Super Bowl. Cam Cameron's plays did not give the ball to Rice if the defense changed.

So what are you getting at? The scheme sucks? I agree.

You mention Caldwell eliminating the "if then" and succeeding but point out that even in the best of circumstances that Dallas will still allow the defense to dictate to them.

Yeah, the whole 2-play option at the line is shit.

If you're going to let Romo change out of the play that is called play, let him audible entirely to something better than the "next best option" between 2 given plays.

Garrett was promoted from interim HC to permanent HC in 2011. He got to put "his staff" together then, though I'd argue Jerry probably dictated or at least influenced some of those hires... Rob Ryan.

After 3 full seasons, there are 2 position coaches still left here. 11 have been replaced.

If the Dallas Cowboys hire Scott Linehan as the playcaller, it would upset the current one, Bill Callahan.

A source said Callahan would be opposed to a move and that he would contemplate his future with the Cowboys should it happen. Callahan, who is signed through the 2014 season, became the playcaller in 2013 when Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones wanted to take those duties away from head coach Jason Garrett.


When the source was asked would Callahan be happy with a potential change, the source said, "hell no."

Callahan didn’t respond for comment.

In 2013 the Cowboys finished 16th overall, 24th as a running attack and 14th in passing with Callahan calling the plays. Callahan, who has run the West Coast offense in the past, was making adjustments to calling plays in a timing-based offense, which is something the Cowboys have employed since 2007.

Callahan had his struggles gaining the concepts with the offense, even delaying his vacation last year so he could make sure he had a command of things. Callahan had to not only deal with an offense he wasn't familiar with, but the increased involvement of quarterback Tony Romo, who became more active in game planning in 2013.

Callahan was always complimentary of the chance to call plays, saying the Cowboys were running their offense and not Garrett's.

However, it appears Garrett wasn’t happy with the results and is trying to make changes. At last week’s Senior Bowl practices, Garrett and Jones said Callahan would return but stopped short of saying what his duties would be.

"I wouldn’t address any of that until we finalize everything and we're in the process of that," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said from the Senior Bowl last week.

According to ESPN's Ed Werder and Chris Mortensen, Jones and Garrett have a disagreement over who the offensive playcaller should be.

The pair are on the verge of a compromise in hiring Linehan, who has a close relationship with Garrett.

One source who expects Linehan to be hired speculated he could have the title of passing game coordinator while also being designated the Cowboys' playcaller. If so, Linehan would become the third different offensive playcaller in three seasons in Dallas, following Garrett and Callahan.

In a setup one source described as "strange" and "dysfunctional," Garrett ceded play-calling authority to Callahan a year ago in what appeared to be a change mandated by Jones.

If Linehan is hired, the Cowboys could make Callahan the run game coordinator and Linehan the passing game coordinator. The Cowboys have employed a similar arrangement in the past.

But this potential move would upset Callahan, who also resides as the offensive line coach. Callahan was given credit for improving the line, which produced left tackle Tyron Smith’s first Pro Bowl selection and saw rookie center and 2013 first-round pick, Travis Frederick have a solid season.

If Callahan hadn't called plays like a MORON last season he wouldn't have to worry about Linehan being hired. When you're stupid everything is that much harder.

Bingo. That play-calling was driving me nuts. 2nd and 6, empty backfield/shotgun. Not even a play action, just that horrible formation allowing the D to just rush full throttle at Romo. If they ran once on 2nd down, I honestly don't remember it. They won despite that nonsense.

The Cowboys rank top 7 in total offense and 2nd in rushing offense. The team is tied for 4th overall with respect to points per game. Romo has the highest QB rating in the league and the team led the league in time of possession. The team went 12-4.

I'm not claiming that Linehan and Garrett are perfect, but they (or at least one of them) must be doing something right.

After the 2nd Philly game he was on Mike & Mike and said he was really impressed with some of the stuff Dallas and Romo did with the empty backfield set. Said Romo was 6/7 that game vs Philly so he analyzed every snap this year in which Dallas used that formation, and the stats were staggering. It was something like 45 compeltions in 60 drop backs, with 6 or 7 tds and only 1 pick.
