Cowboys coaches fear firings

Updated: December 22, 2013, 10:17 AM ET

By Ed Werder | ESPN

There is concern internally that coach Jason Garrett and his entire coaching staff will be fired unless the Dallas Cowboys win the NFC East and reach the playoffs, a team source said.

Dallas likely needs to beat the Washington Redskins on Sunday and then prevail against the Philadelphia Eagles in a winner-take-all season finale in Week 17 -- which is how each of the past two seasons have ended for Garrett's teams against the New York Giants in 2011 and Redskins in 2012.

Despite lingering tension between Garrett and Tony Romo after the coach singled out the quarterback for wrongly changing a run call into a pass before last week's game-turning interception against the Green Bay Packers, where the Cowboys lost despite leading 26-3 at halftime, Romo has tried to send a message of encouragement to teammates, league sources say.

If we protect the football and put up points as we have been, he said, then we can be a team that has a chance.

"We have to stand up and stay together," tight end Jason Witten said.

Werder is usually dead on about stuff like this.

Big mistake to fire Marinelli and the OL coach.

I doubt Mairnelli would be fired, although he might be allowed to go with Lovie Smith as his DC if/when Lovie gets another HC job.

Gruden has ties to Marinelli (and the ST coach too) and IMO those two are really th only one's worth keeping, maybe the asst OL coach as well. He's done a solid job.

Marinelli isn't going anywhere. He signed a 2 year contract and any team has to get our permission if they want to hire him.

He's the only coach on this team who doesn't belong coaching high school.

The ST coach is definitely legit, I hope we keep him.

Asst OL coach Frank Pollack has done a solid job as well.

Report: Garrett out if Cowboys don’t make playoffs

Posted by Mike Florio on December 22, 2013, 10:58 AM EST

Those inside the Cowboys organization finally have caught up with those outside the Cowboys organization.

Ed Werder of ESPN reports that the “current expectation” within the Cowboys organization is that coach Jason Garrett and his staff will be fired if the team doesn’t make it to the playoffs.

Folks outside the organization have expected that all year, from the moment Garrett’s brother, John, was pushed off the payroll and Jason was compelled to give up the offensive playcalling duties.

Per Werder, Jones doesn’t want to fire Jason Garrett. But if Garrett fails for the third time in three years as head coach to make it to the postseason, he’ll be done.

Werder’s report that the entire coaching staff will be fired could close the door on the possibility of Jones hiring Jon Gruden to turn the mess around in Dallas, given that four former Gruden assistants currently are on the staff in Dallas.

Garrett’s fate could be sealed as soon as Sunday. If the Cowboys lose to the Redskins and the Eagles beat the Bears, there will not be a Third Annual NFC East Championship game in Week 17; Dallas already will be out.

Even if the Cowboys make it to the postseason, we think a termination of Garrett could happen if the Cowboys offer up an embarrassing home loss in the wild-card round. Again, the Cowboys first have to get to the playoffs before they can lose there.

Shouldn't the fate of the assistants be decided by the new coach? I kid, I kid. That's how it's done in respectable organizations, not Dallas.

Jerry knows. That's all that matters.

Didn't you hear him talk the other day how he studies players and stuff. I'm sure he does the same with coaches.
