The Dallas Cowboys have expressed interest in cornerback Stanford Routt, who was released by the Oakland Raiders on Thursday.

Vann McElroy, Routt's Houston-based agent, said Friday morning his client is scheduled to visit the Buffalo Bills on Saturday with another trip planned for next week with the Tennessee Titans.

McElroy said no other visits have been scheduled, however, Minnesota, Kansas City and Dallas have reached out to the agent about Routt's services.

Last year, Routt signed a restructured contract for five-years worth $54.5 million with the Raiders, with at least $20 million in guarantees the first two seasons of the deal.

According to STATS LLC, opponents were held to a 47.4 completion percentage against Routt. But he allowed eight touchdown passes, tied for the second-most in the NFL and led the league with 17 penalties committed according to STATS LLC. The Raiders had to make a decision regarding Routt because if he was still on the roster on Friday he would have been guaranteed a base salary of $5 million.

The connection to Routt comes from defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who coached him in Oakland. Ryan is partial to players he's coached in other places as example of the team signing safety Abram Elam last year.

Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones has said there will be new faces to the secondary and it's expected Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick will return to the team. However, Alan Ball, Frank Walker, two cornerbacks, are free agents.

Veteran corner Terence Newman, still under contract, could be released in a cost savings move.

Just heard norms rant on Routt, Dqwell jackson and Matt Roth.

Norm says ryan likes them all and jackson is a perfect fit.

Any more meat on that bone? He say anything else, noetworthy?

not really, just a real long winded take on jackson....Ryan really likes him and he is a perfect fit here...played great for ryan and is a tackling machine who would fit perfectly next to lee......but is a 2 down linebacker.

I love the idea personally......him or mcintosh...a veteran to make sure we are not getting killed there if carter flops.

Goose Gosselin out on covering the draft.

Dallas Morning News told him he is not covering the draft anymore.

I think if we sign Routt... then we're either going DeCastro or Brockers.

Leaning towards Brockers.

I like the idea of signing one veteran corner and drafting another high in the draft somewhere.

No on Brockers.

He's supposed to be the best 5 technique in the draft. Great wingspan. Young, only 20, still growing.

The team loved JJ Watt last year. 5 technique is a huge hole for this team.

Do you not like the player, or the position?

Apparently he plays a lot of nose too. Perfect size, body, athleticism for our line.

That would be a swell idea. Continue to bring Carter along slowly. According to his scouting reports (Carter) he was prone to mis-reading plays in college. So he might need to be a bit player and work his way up the depth chart as he learns more of the game.

The finances are important here because although the Raiders didn’t think he was good enough to justify his contract that doesn’t mean he can’t play. He played nearly every snap for Oakland last year and opposing quarterbacks completed just 51 percent of their passes when throwing to Routt’s area. Routt allowed just 11 yards per receptions and defensed 10 passes.

That’s the good Routt. The bad Routt committed 17 penalties including eight for holding and seven for pass interference. The total number of penalties committed was the highest on the Raiders and the highest among NFL cornerbacks. He also allowed nine touchdown passes, the most of any cornerback.

The penalties are not a new issue. He has committed 38 in the past three seasons. To be fair, Routt’s issues with penalties may be connected to the culture in Oakland. They annually are among the league leaders in penalties committed and in 2011 they set the NFL record for both penalties and penalty yardage in a single season.
