IRVING – Brian Waters visited Valley Ranch on Monday, worked out for the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday and the 12-year veteran guard was officially signed and on the practice field Wednesday.
“He had a good workout,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday morning. “Brian’s a guy we’ve been interested in for a while. We actually talked about him a couple years ago when he ended up signing there with New England. We’re excited to bring him in here. He’s a real pro.
“He’s been a damn good football player for a long time.”
Garrett said Waters, 36, had been working out in the off-season and “is not much heavier than his normal playing weight.” Waters did not play last season. When discussing with Waters why he took the season off, Garrett said the six-time Pro Bowler had “some family concerns.”
“He still has to get himself in to condition to play at this level and that’s just natural,” Garrett said. “He knows what he’s doing. He learns quickly. We anticipate him really hitting the ground running and hopefully being a part of our football team pretty soon.”
Waters worked out with the second-team offensive line at right guard on Wednesday. Although it’s unlikely that he’ll play Sunday night in the season opener, Garrett wouldn’t rule him out.
“We’ll just try to get through today,” Garrett said. “He got here early this morning and he’s trying to learn as quickly as he can. We’ll try to get him acclimated as soon as we can and just see what kind of progress he makes.”
