A suspect was reportedly inside the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building at 8:20 a.m. Several news outlets are reporting that he has barricaded himself inside a particular room, but police haven't confirmed. Approximately 3,000 people work in the building.
A suspect is described as a black male with a dark complexion, approximately 5-foot-10 to 6 feet tall, 170 pounds with a black shirt and a black hat. He is believed have multiple guns, including an AR-15, according to WUSA9.
A "shelter in place" order was issued for Navy Yard personnel. At least six schools were on lockdown as a precaution in the D.C. area, according to CNN.
Two females and one male are undergoing treatment at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a representative said at a press conference. One female has a gunshot wound to the head and hand, another was shot in the shoulder. The male has "multiple wounds to his legs."
"Their chances for survival are very good," she said.
SWAT crews as well as police from multiple local and federal agencies are on the scene. President Obama has been briefed "several times" about the shooting, Fox News reports.
