Irony of this is, his morning show WAS cancelled by NBC about two weeks after this segment originally aired. Fred Silverman though, didn't want Letterman to leave the network so he gave him a one-year contract for 20K per week, to sit out for a year and occasionally fill in for Johnny Carson. Twenty thousand dollars a week. Great gig if you can get it!
