IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys have talked with Stanford's Vic Fangio about joining Jason Garrett's staff as defensive coordinator, according to multiple sources.
Fangio, who has predominantly used the 3-4 scheme in his career, finished his first season at Stanford, helping the Cardinal to an Orange Bowl victory, and it was widely assumed he was going to follow Jim Harbaugh to San Francisco as the 49ers' defensive coordinator.
Fangio served as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (1995-98), Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001) and Houston Texans (2002-05) and was an assistant to the head coach in Baltimore from 2006-08 before working with the Ravens' linebackers in 2009. The Ravens had a top-three defense in three of his four years in Baltimore.
While he does not have a direct tie to Garrett, Fangio worked under Dom Capers, who was going to be Garrett's defensive coordinator had he taken either the Baltimore or Atlanta job in 2008.
Paul Pasqualoni finished the season as the Cowboys defensive coordinator after Wade Phillips was fired and remains a candidate for the full-time job.
