Why Dallas Cowboys LT Tyron Smith gave up a little in negotiations for 8-year contract extension

OXNARD, Calif. — The Dallas Cowboys have Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith under contract now through 2023.

He has signed a 10-year contract for about $109 million. It’s an eight-year contract extension. The contract includes a $10 million signing bonus, $40 million guaranteed and about $32 million guaranteed over the first three years of the deal.

But many thought Smith would pull in well more than about $11 million per season. So why did he pull the trigger on this deal?

Smith found it important that he was not only a Cowboys player for life but also valued how much the club helped him through his family situation, a source said.

If you remember, Smith went through an ugly family situation where his lawyer accused his parents of taking money from him after he had already agreed to give them money from his rookie deal. Here’s the story on what Smith had to deal with from 2012.

Good lord thats a lot of money. But worth it, IMO.

How much does that OT the skins drafted a year before we took Smith make? Or is he still on his rookie deal?

Only $10M of the $40M is actual signing bonus.

Means $30M of the guaranteed potion is going to be base salaries.......and I'm willing to bet they restructuring some of it and by the time he hits the end of his contract even though his cap number is huge his base salary will be relatively cheap which sets up all sorts of great possibilities.

I thought 7/84 for TSmith, so this is right there. The 10m signing bonus is great. Higher guarantee, lower signing bonus. Should be a pretty straight forward pro-ration. LTs cost money and take the biggest cap hits for non-QBs.

Dez should be the opposite, lower guarantee, higher signing bonus, shorter length. I would like a 5/60-65m. 25m guaranteed(same as 2 years of franchise) and maybe 15m signing bonus.

I have no idea how this guy talks down to people about the cap.

I guess it makes sense, but Jerry has terrible luck with extensions (RW11, Hamlin, MB4, Scandrick, Romo and his balky back, etc.)

sounds like how the eagles used to play it with their young guns

who would subsequently hold out once the cap goes up in three years and they're getting paid less than an average player at the same position.

Tyron Smith is a better player than all of those guys, and is far younger too than when they got their deals

I remember when you dummies said I was stupid for wanting to draft a 275 left tackle with the 10th pick?

Yeah, I'm the best.
