PALM BEACH, Fla. --
No offense to Tony Romo, but Norv Turner isn't taking anyone over Troy Aikman in an argument over quarterbacks.

A week ago, Aikman was asked by a reporter if he was a better player than Romo is now. His answer to the loaded question: Romo is, and he'll win a title at some point in his career. A bit surprising, even though Aikman has always been a staunch defender of Romo while maintaining objectivity as Fox's lead analyst.

At the AFC coaches' breakfast Tuesday morning, Turner -- Aikman's old offensive coordinator (1991-93) and current Chargers coach -- spoke more to what Aikman did during his Hall of Fame career with the Cowboys than what Romo is or isn't doing now.

“I don’t know that I can make an evaluation on Tony. I’ve seen him. I don’t study him," Turner said. "But to me, the whole key to that position, right now the numbers are always inflated. It still comes down to playing great in the fourth quarter, playing great with the game on the line and obviously playing great in the playoffs. It’s hard for me to name three or four guys that were better than Troy in that situation. I think Troy was being very nice and diplomatic, but there aren’t many guys that I would list better than Troy Aikman.

“It’s certainly not anything against Tony Romo or any devaluation of his ability. I think a lot of Tony Romo. He’s an outstanding player.”

Interesting he would cite the 4th qtr, Romo has generally outstanding in the 4th.

I agree with norv though all the qbs of this era have extremely inflated numbers.

Why in the Hell did Troy start this Tony VS Troy BS ?!?!?

to be fair, troy has always liked tony and has never really flinched on his belief on the guy.

and its march and no matter what is said about the cowboys turns into a controversy.

I imagine if Jay Novacek told todd archer tomorrow that he is a huge fan of witten and feels witten is the better player the guys on the old team would say he is crazy or whatever.

end of the day, as cowboys fans we are lucky to have had so many great players.

sort of, They also caved in to alot of whining from the manning camp when the colts couldnt beat the pats.

manning and his family are chronic whiners and I suspect behind the scenes they put on quite a show bitching about the patriots defensive tactics.

it started with the league wanting more of what the rams did in 99 and just evolved from there.

To me, Inferior players to John Elway and Dan Marino are breaking there records because of the rule adjustments.

And no I dont think peyton is the best ever, I dont think he is in the same universe as those two mentioned above, partiularly john elway.

Sorry theebs imo Peyton is pretty much the GOAT. He is surgical out there, and without the gimmicky Pats offense. His ball location in throwing (covered) people open is unmatched.

he is great no doubt, To me he is nowhere close to the player elway was.

A guy like elway in his prime in this league would be completely unstoppable. Aarron Rodgers was incredible last year and is similar playing wise to elway and he seemed almost unstoppable.

there are many who could match mannings numbers in this league today.

I think Brady and Manning are the two true great qbs in the game today but I dont think either is as good as that group from the 80s. Especially when you throw in the size and skill of the wr in todays game..

then again look at the WRs they've been throwing to. Wayne is a legit talent sure but Manning made a king out of skinny-ass tiny Harrison and does the same with every WR that he plays with. Garcon, Stokley, the white Mormon, etc? These guys are nobodies. Brady has the gimmicky offense but the best WRs he's ever had is Randy Moss one year and an undersized white guy who runs crisp routes.

Everyone wants to credit rule changes with the reason so many QBs are killing it in numbers but I am starting to doubt that logic. I think it has something to do with it. But defenders are bigger, faster, stronger, the game is faster, the windows are tighter, and these guys are still KILLING. The passing game evolved, it got WAY more complex, people stopped using TEs and FBs solely as fifth blockers, etc. That just wasn't on the table when those guys played.

The important thing is how they compare to their peers imo. Which is why Romo impresses so much, with how he holds up year in-year out against this crop of excellent QBs. And when you look at the body of work, length of time, Manning stands above, IMO.

Ten or 15 years from now when the NFL is playing flag football and 6000 yard passing seasons are commonplace, SP will be arguing Peyton is the GOAT and the kids will be telling him what a nostalgic old fogey he is...

all fair points. the spread offenses are probably almost as equal as the defensive adjustments for sure.

I just simply dont think in this current era of the game manning playing in a dome has to me been as good as a guy like elway.

We are probably both wrong and the reality is donovan mcnabb is the greatest of all time, I mean he has andy reid coaching him for christs sake, that guy is a qb genius. Have you seen what he did with aj feely?

I just don't get why it's never brought up. If you give Elway 5 options on a pass play (and force the defense to cover five) instead of the olden days "we're gonna trot out 2-3 receivers and have the HB check the rush and then roll out for a possible dump off underneath" damn right he would have shredded. It's not just about the rule changes. The game is evolving and being perfected by some brilliant minds and great talents.

I know, but it just gives others another chance to blast Romo

Nobody has been blasting Romo.

I think a huge problem Cowboy fans continue to have is when someone says "guy A is better than guy B" that for whatever reason its interpreted as "you are saying guy B sux"

Which isnt true at all.

I said two #1's, at the least.

And I also said I'd only do it with a specific plan in place. IE like when I posted about possibly signing Payton Manning (assuming he was clearly 100%) for a couple seasons, along with drafting his obvious successor now or next year.
