Babe Laufenberg , Dallas Cowboys radio color analyst and former NFL quarterback, analyzes the Cowboys win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
Donavan McNabb thinks the Cowboys should trade Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. What do you think of that idea?
What I think is that Donovan McNabb must not realize there is a salary cap. Additionally, it would be idiotic to trade Dez Bryant. And at 36-years-old and coming off multiple major injuries, Tony Romo would have very limited trade value. The next question might as well be if I think Roger Staubach is coming out of retirement.
Is the debate over between Romo and Dak Prescott?
In my mind, yes. I don't see how you make any other decision. I feel bad for Tony, because he has played some really good football for this organization and was saddled with some very average teams. But he is 36 and the clock is hitting midnight for Tony with the unexpected emergence of Dak Prescott. And at 5-1, just playing .500 football the rest of the season will most likely land the Cowboys in the playoffs. That experience for Prescott will be invaluable. I can give you a myriad of reasons for continuing with Prescott. Can't think of many for turning it back to Romo. But wow, what a luxury to have a guy like Romo to turn to if anything were to happen to Prescott.
What has impressed you most about Dak on and off the field?
What hasn't impressed me? Does the right things on the field, says the right things off it. Like any young quarterback, or any young player for that matter, there are areas where he will improve. He is clearly doing the things necessary to win. He is smart, a team player, dedicated and talented. As well as he has played, he is going to continue to get better game by game.
What do you think of the play calling right now from Scott Linehan?
The one thing I have learned over the years is the better players you have, the better play caller you become. But I will say, he has been pretty aggressive. The two third-and-one calls to Lucky Whitehead were genius -- first the reverse that jump-started a 97-yard drive, then the play action pass for 35 yards that led to the touchdown that put Dallas up 27-9 and pretty much sealed the win.
Could this year's draft go down as one of the best in Cowboys history?
We are probably a long way from answering that question, or even being able to ask it. But finding your QB is a great start. Hard to top the class of 1964 that saw three Hall Of Famers come out of it-- Mel Renfro, Bob Hayes, and Roger Staubach.
