From the first few seconds, the question is "If you say that abortion is a crime or if abortion is murder, you have to deal with it under the law......should abortion be punished?" Even the interviewer talks about a "matter of law if you ban abortion."

Did you watch it without any volume Dooms?

Trump set the trap for himself, and also wasn't prepped to understand this was a unfriendly interview. There's no way to come out of watching that, thinking he'd been well versed on the subject matter. He shot himself in the foot and gave Matthews his second ever "thrill up his leg."

Right, if he didn't screw up, why did he reverse himself the next day? Had to be pretty awful mistake for him to admit he was wrong. Usually when he says something controversial he simply doubles down on it.

Those interviews are what they are but I'm not sure he set the trap himself. I don't think anyone who supported Trump is going to change their minds because of the interview and visa versa.

I first heard about the statement on the radio. The way it was presented was "Trump says women who get abortions need to be punished."

My first reaction was "wtf would he say that for, even if he believed it?" So I went on for a few days, was hearing all the outrage, so I decided to look for where he said it and to whom he said it to.

Firstly, it was a stupid hypothetical question presented by Mathews. It will never be illegal. He pressed Trump several times, changing the frame of his question each time to make it slightly more obscure and less direct. By the tin he answered the question, it went from "should women be punished for aborting a baby?, to, If abortion is a crime, shouldn't there be a punishment under the law?"

Second, I would be less surprised if Trump were a polished political hack that is trained to talk for 5 minutes without saying anything of consequence.

It's a lousy narrative. Mathews did his job, Trump answered a simple question. His answer was not wrong. If at some point, which it never will be, abortion is a crime, there's a law prohibiting it, then yes, the act should be punishable by law.

What in the hell is so controversial about that? If anything, I'm more irritated that he seemed to walk it back a bit and put the punishment on any doctor that performs an abortion in that hypothetical situation.

I'm voting for the guy, so I realize my opinion is bias. Did anyone that hates him see it that way?

Yes, several people I work with also made the same point you just did, and they are liberals and hate everyone of the Repub candidates.

The guy I heard on the radio the other day that called in and made this point also said he was a Cruz supporter, but saw the question as nothing but a trick and the media going off the deep end.

That's the rub and nobody gets it. Everyone from the President to the pretenders-to-the-throne all have handlers and speechwriters; Trump no matter that I don't like him, isn't reading someone else's thoughts and presenting them as his own. The only thing that surprises me is that he's not smart enough to make it a glaring point of derision against these windbags.

You quite often seem to have some random liberal acquaintance who conveniently agrees with your take on things.

You aren't bullshitting us, are you David? Seem to have a lot of interactions with liberals. Sure you know what side of the fence you're on?

I don't think being a non-politician is a valid excuse for failing to think through a critical, pivotal issue and saying something stupid like that.

I mean of course the Matthews of the world are going to try to catch him saying something dumb, but that's any Pub. And you still can't fall for it. He better get that cleaned up before the general because that's the type of soundbite that can sway the critical undecidedes, fair nor not. it's not like the trap type questions are going to stop, especially with him.

I feel like I could write a 20 minute speech that woukd get the guy the nomination. I get the feeling that he doesn't listen to anyone on his team. There are so many avenues he could take to put this thing away before the convention.

I love his delivery. If I were him, from this day until it's locked up, I wouldn't even acknowledge the existence of Ted Cruz. I'd be telling people:

Hey, look at what's going on here, folks. We entered this political process months ago, we've debated, we've done the countless rally and townhall appearances, all in the hopes that, WE THE PEOPLE, could settle this thing. Now, it looks like the very corrupt system we've been railing against this whole campaign is ready to ignore the process, essentially saying you don't know what's best for you. Here's the long and the short of it, Sen. Cruz fought a good fight. The obvious truth is we've got one candidate left that can effectively put a stop to any potential back room deals that would render the primary process and your voice useless. A vote for anyone but Trump at this point, it would be a vote for the corruption to continue.

If he came out with a message like that, focusing on what the alternative is, that would put this thing away with the quickness.

Cruz isn't going to get 1237 in this process, he's naive if he thinks he's coming out of a contested convention as the nominee. Rewind this thing about 45 days with what all parties know today, I think it would have been smarter for Cruz to jump Rubios ass rather than team up with him against Trump.

If that would have been the case, he may have had a chance to run on the ticket as Trump's VP.

I'm really hoping the conspiracy theory of Cruz/Trump uniting at the convention (once Cruz sees he cant win) and Trump promising Cruz he'll nominate him to SCOTUS in return for Cruz's delegates and support as Pres plays out.

Seems like a major win win to me. Cruz would probably be an outstanding Supreme Court justice.

I'm cool with Cruz going some place where I won't have to look at that face anymore.

SCOTUS would be perfect. I didn't even know what Scalia looked like until he died. I couldn't pick C Thomas out of a police lineup. Sounds good.

How could it be? The guy is a lifelong celebrity and has likely had more face time on television than any other candidate in the race.

He should be able to put these questions to rest with ease.

Haven't we lamented previous candidates? Cruz or Trump? The Donald is another rich MF that wants to rule the free world. The Bush Clinton Bush Obama thing hasn't lived up to expectations. At this point, why not? Hoof and anothers left of center will chime in, but I am curious about you.

If you’re asking what I think you’re asking, it’s because there is no left or right. It’s all just political theater. Whomever gets in will do so regardless of what we think or vote. The result will be the same: trending toward Europe level taxation, packaged in promises and a diminished U.S..

Just listen to all of these shit-heads making promises they can never keep. Free stuff, border wall; more free stuff, equal rights for every individual identity. All these promises that require funding, all funded through taxation. Then he/she/it can complain about ‘Congress’ blocking efforts and having an excuse for accomplishing none of their campaign promises while keeping the tax dollars they’d collected.

Seriously consider this: if Trump is appealing, think just how far things have sunk. A TV personality who craves attention, lacks humility, honesty; consistency of vision/ethic and genuine self control. He’s saying things. Things people want to hear. Every man should be wary of people who tell him what he wants to hear. But they’re not.

So you are understand the risks. Does it matter? Hillary and Obama created ISIS. They were fully briefed on the risks.
