Russian ice hockey player Alex Ovechkin has become the National Hockey League's joint-highest all-time scorer after hitting his 894th career goal. The Washington Capitals star is now tied with Canadian Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky, whose record has stood for 26 years.

Records are made to be broken. So they say. ALEX OVECHKIN has now tied Gretzky's unfamable all-time career record. Which, no one thought would ever be broken. WOW 20250405_122006.jpg

i am very happy for ovechkin. he's been a great player for a long time, won a cup, and now this record. you could not ask for more out of your career than what he's acheived

unfortunately for ovechkin that when you're comparing overall greatness, wayne gretzky existed, and put up these types of numbers:

- if gretzky never scored a goal, he would still be NHL all-time leader in points

- in 1986 gretzky scored 215 points. The non-Gretzky record at that time was 152 points. So he broke the record by 41.4%. To match that, a QB would need to throw for 78 TD’s and 7747 yards. A baseball player would need to hit 103 home runs in a season to match that.

- He has more records in a single sport than any other athlete in recorded history

- The Gretzky Brothers are the all time highest scoring siblings in the nhl. Wayne's brother only has 3 points

- 3 players in NHL history to get over 100 assists. Orr and Lemieux did it once each. Gretzky did it in 11 straight seasons.

- He’s the only player who has 3 seasons of 50 in 50. The first time Wayne scored 50 goals in under 50 games he did it in 39 games. No one has done it in less then 46

- He's the fastest player to reach 1000 points. He's also the second fastest, in that his next 1000 points were also in less games it's taken others.

- No one other than Gretzky has ever had a 200-point season. Not one. Ever. Gretzky did it four times.

- During the 80's, Gretzky had more 5+ point games (85) than he had 0 point games (74)
