Still Waiting
Coaching Staff Changes On The Horizon

Nick Eatman

The Cowboys are expected to announce Rob Ryan as their next defensive coordinator.

IRVING, Texas - For the most part, Monday was a rather quiet and peaceful day at Valley Ranch, with about 90 percent of the building observing the Martin Luther King holiday.

But there's no time to rest for the coaching staff, which returned Monday to the office.

Although the Cowboys have yet to make any official announcements on changes, there will be some new faces in 2011. And, there will be some familiar faces with new roles and titles.

Obviously, the most notable staff change will be the addition of Rob Ryan, who is expected to arrive at Valley Ranch Tuesday to officially sign his contract to become the team's next defensive coordinator. Ryan, the brother of Jets head coach Rex Ryan, and the son of longtime Eagles coach Buddy Ryan, spent the last seven years as an AFC coordinator - the last two in Cleveland and the previous five in Oakland.

He also runs a 3-4 scheme, but it's believed to be vastly different from the one Wade Phillips installed back in 2007.

Other than Rob Ryan, the Cowboys still have to address several coaching positions.

* John Garrett, the brother of Jason Garrett who has been on staff since 2007 as the tight ends coach, is expected to be named passing game coordinator, in addition to his tight end coaching duties. Garrett will receive a new deal since his original contract expires this month.

* With the naming of a passing game coordinator, it only seems logical the Cowboys would create a running game coordinator. The two likely candidates would be running backs coach Skip Peete and offensive line coach Hudson Houck. With the edge in experience, it seems Houck would get the nod, in addition to coaching the line.

* If indeed Houck takes on added duties, it would also make sense to add an assistant offensive line coach. Hall of Fame lineman Bruce Matthews was at Valley Ranch Monday and could be the candidate there. Matthews spent the last two years with that title in Houston, although the Cowboys did talk to former tight end Dan Campbell about a similar position. Either way, someone like Matthews or Campbell could lessen the load for Houck if he has an expanded role.

* The Cowboys need to hire a wide receiver coach to replace the departed Ray Sherman. The team did meet last week with Alabama tight ends/special teams coach Bobby Williams, a former Lions receiver coach as well as a running backs coach in Miami, which is where he worked two seasons (2005-06) with Jason Garrett. But also in the running for the WR coach position is Adam Gase, who recently coached the Broncos wideouts and has been a Lions QB coach, where he has ties with Roy Williams and worked under Mike Martz.

* Wade Wilson, whose contract expires this month, is expected to be re-signed as quarterbacks coach.

* The Cowboys need a defensive line coach with the departure of Paul Pasqualoni, who is now the head coach at UConn. With Ryan coming over from Cleveland, there is a chance he brings some of the Browns assistants. Last year's defensive line coach was Bryan Cox, a 12-year veteran linebacker who made three Pro Bowls. Cox is considered a candidate for the vacant position.

* LB coach Reggie Herring, still under contract for 2011, has now been granted permission to interview with the Houston Texans to possibly join Wade Phillips' defensive staff. The Cowboys initially denied Houston's request to meet with Herring when they were still figuring out their own defensive plans. Herring is expected to meet with the Texans on Tuesday.

* Kicking coach Chris Boniol, brought in last year as a consultant for the summer to help David Buehler, was asked to stay throughout the season on just a one-year deal. But Boniol is expected to return again next year and possibly beyond.

Again, nothing is official yet. The Cowboys have been and remain quiet on their coaching matters, but it does appear we're getting close to having a somewhat finalized coaching staff.

After reading the title of the article I was depressed to see there was no mention of Campo anywhere.

I'm sure its Ryan' call. If he feels comfortable with Campo maybe he stays. If not, he goes.

It might matter who is available to replace him. If he doesnt see a suitable replacement then it would make sense to keep him.

I'm sure it most likely will be Ryan's call. Outside of Phillips, Campo was the next in line for who's head I wanted to see on the chopping block and roll out the door.

Ah, yes. It would make sense to keep Campo.

Like it made sense to hire Wade.

Ya know, whatever the Cowboys decide to do.
