Stephen Jones does not hope the Cowboys will make the playoffs.

The club’s executive vice president expects them to make the playoffs to end a three-year absence.

“We have expectations we make it,’’ Jones said. “Our team has confidence. Our coaches have confidence. I know Jerry (Jones) and I have confidence that we’re going to do what we have to do and we’re going to get in these playoffs.

“Not only get in, but make a difference.’’

The Cowboys enter the final three games of the season at 7-6, one game behind Philadelphia in the NFC East. If the Cowboys put together three consecutive victories _ something they have been unable to do this season _ they win the division.

Jones said Monday night’s 45-28 loss in Chicago “was not acceptable.’’ And he does stop short of guaranteeing the Cowboys will secure a playoff spot.

“I’m not a guarantee guy,’’ Jones said. “But I’m certainly a confident guy. I believe good things are going to happen to this team.’’

The ability to make a legitimate run for the playoffs hinges on Sunday afternoon’s game against Green Bay.

“I will say this,’ Jones said Wednesday night on 1310 and 96.7 FM The Ticket. “This is crucial in terms of us taking the steps we want to take. I think our players understand what needs to get done. We’re in a great situation at AT&T Stadium in front of our home crowd and we certainly want to come back and show them what we can do as a football team.

“We certainly feel like we can do this. We have a lot of confidence we’re going to do it, and it starts against Green Bay on Sunday.’’

Is there a sub .500 team right now that you would trade entire team for entire team because Dallas could win this Sunday with those new personnel (assuming Jason stays home sick that Sunday)?
