You guys are on the ledge about Garrett staying, but more likely is Garrett stays and Linehan and Marinelli both move on.

Go ahead and jump.

No wai, man. These two coaches believe in what Garrett is building here and should have no desire to leave.

And stuff.

Who is doing the training here?
That was going to be my first question... If "we" are training him up, who's this "we" doing the training? Jerry? Jerry and Stephen?

Then I thought about it, and the answer is obvious... Jerry has imposed his coaching staff on Garrett to do the training. Wade was the defensive guru, who was the HC in name only, giving Garrett the time to be groomed for the job... but Wade lost the team earlier than Jerry thought he would, and had to force Garrett into HC. But never fear, Jerry brings in the conga line of former head coaches and past their prime DCs to help train up Garrett.... Callahan, Kiffin, Marinelli, Linehan.

This whole training him up thing is bullshit though. Just another excuse to keep the guy who keeps Jerry and Stephen comfortable.

Oh... and when was the last time the Cowboys had a HC in here who we spent all this time on training him to be a HC, and he "got away" to another team and was super-successful? Norv? Wannstedt? Campo? Chan?

When they say, "training him", they just mean training him to not balk at his bosses dictating playcalling, changing his coordinators, deciding who they draft, etc. Basically playing the front man and knowing his role.

sure they "want" him to return...they want to be right about the guy...they want a successful season for a change

but if they don't make the playoffs I still don't think he's back, especially if they fail miserably again Sunday night like they did two weeks ago

If Garrett stays, why would Linehan be leaving? Is someone going to give him a HC gig?

Because he has shown great success as a coordinator here in just one year. It's all about the money. And, yeah, there could the possibility of a HC offer. But even an offer of more money to be an OC somewhere and I think he could be gone.

And don't give me that connection to Garrett crap. That was pitched to us when he came, and I'm still not sold on it.

Did he only sign a 1yr contract here? If not, he isn't leaving unless its for HC job. I seriously doubt anyone is giving him another HC gig.

As fro money, Jones does alot of crap that pisses everyone off but he pays the shit out of assistant coaches. If him and Garrett want te guy here, money wont be a reason he'd be leaving.

He talks about himself doesn't he?

Yeah, he's the one guy who probably will stay. I am worried about Callahan and Marinelli taking off, though. Those would be huge losses.

Everyone seems to speak very highly of Frank Pollack though. There could also be some OL coaches available who could replace Callahan if they weren't confident enough in Pollack, who has been on the staff under Callahan now for a couple seasons. I was reading his bio on dc.com, says he also played for Callahan back in the late 80's in college.

I don't think Marinelli goes. I bet he wants to see what he can do with ACTUAL talent. As far as Garrett staying, you'd get the better (or same) results getting Corky from A Life Goes On to be the HC. Garrett will do everything possible to get us out of the playoffs.

So why would he stay here??

Are we in a position to accumulate a bunch of talent in the offseason?

Money for one.

I think if he leaves, he might be inclined to go back to work for his best friend (reportedly Lovie)

I think we're going to see some significant changes in personnel on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. Especially if Romo gets through the remainder of the season ok and they feel good about him still playing at a high level next yr.

Doesn't Lovie have his other BFF as dc right now? Leslie Frazier?

He does, which means he'd either have to demote him or hire Marinelli as something other than just DC. Maybe he'd be DL coach and asst HC there if he weren't DC.

I think your first two phrases are absolutely correct. They want him to return and they want to be right about him.

In fact, I think Jerry and son want these things so badly that there is almost no way that Garrett does not return next year. Garrett's job is safe; the team has shown improvement this year.

... Garrett's job is safe not necessarily because it should be safe, but because Jerry doesn't want to be wrong.

if Garrett stays, I can see him staying. I also think we have enough cap room to add a piece in FA (especially if we get rid of carr), and we have a defensive draft. Also, add in having Sean Lee back and assuming DLaw lives up to his 2nd round draft status.

Not upset about this.

I mean people... what do you expect either Jerry or Stephen to say at this moment? We all know the Jones say one thing and do another. For all this crap Stephen is spewing... they have not signed him to an extension yet. In otherwords, they are waiting like the rest of us to see if the Cowboys make the playoffs.

It's going to be hard to explain to the media and fanbase to justify keeping Garrett after missing the playoffs for the 5th consecutive season.
