Cowboys VP Stephen Jones makes it clear that club wants Jason Garrett to return as head coach

By David Moore

Stephen Jones believes Jason Garrett is the right man for the job and is convinced it’s in the franchise’s best interest for him to remain the head coach going forward.

The comments by the club’s chief operating officer are the strongest yet and a clear indication that the Cowboys intend to sign Garrett to a new contract once the season is over.

The Cowboys will finish the season with a winning record for the first time in Garrett’s tenure. The team carries a 9-4 record into Sunday night’s showdown with Philadelphia and has a chance to win the NFC East if it can beat the Eagles in this rematch.

“Jason not only was qualified when he took the job, but he’s improves every day, every week, every month, every year,’’ Jones said. “You know, one of the things you fear is that you train a guy up and then he leaves and he goes on and he’s even better for the next team than he was for you.

“I think Jason has grown leaps and bounds. We are so comfortable _ you know, comfortable can be a bad word, you want to be on edge too _ but I really think Jason is the right guy for this job.’’

Jones made his comments Wednesday night in an appearance on Intentional Grounding on The Ticket (KTCK-AM 1310 and 96.7 FM).

Garrett took over on an interim basis midway through the 2010 season. On Jan. 5 in 2011, he was named the eighth head coach in franchise history and signed a four year contract.

The Cowboys were 8-8 in each of Garrett’s first three seasons before breaking the .500 barrier with last week’s win over Chicago. Stephen Jones said he and his father, owner Jerry Jones, are in agreement regarding the coach’s value to the franchise.

“Obviously it’s an improvement this year and an improvement at a time when a lot of people didn’t think we would improve,’’ Stephen Jones said. “They actually thought we might go backwards and here we are at nine wins with three games to go.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do. But I really think Jason is the right guy for this job, and I know Jerry thinks the same thing. I certainly see Jason being a big part of our future.’’

Jones doesn’t want his comments to distract from the importance of Sunday’s game or the remainder of the regular season as the team attempts to return to the playoffs after a four-year absence. But when asked if he believes it’s in the Cowboys best interests to sign Garrett to another contract once the season concludes, Jones replied, “Well, I do.

“There is a lot of ball left to be played. There is a lot of work that has to be done and Jason has a big say in this. Certainly, how we finish up is going to play a role in this.

“But I do know that our family thinks the world of Jason and his wife Brill, and I know this, I think he’s doing a heck of a job with our football team and I think he’s only going to get better.’’

Yeah, we trained him up. I mean, he was totally qualified at the time and all, but we just don't want to see our training go to waste.

I guarantee it... if Jason doesn't win a playoff game this year, he never will as a Cowboys coach.

And he's not going to this year.

You're in the playoffs right now. It started last week.

Yep. This is setting up for a perfect storm of long-term mediocrity. One great season where everything breaks right gets you into the playoffs. Everyone including the coach gets extensions. A couple of good players like Murray and coaches like Callahan leave. Few core players like Romo and Witten get older. Injury luck is worse. Team finishes 8-8 or worse next year and everyone makes excuses. Rinse and repeat until Romo is totally done. And then more excuses because you don't have a QB.

Enjoy it, Garrett homers.

Spot on.

Except I'm not convinced we make the playoffs this year despite all our luck.

Future excuses for Garrett and his "fans"
2015 season: Romo gets hurt
2016 season: Romo's salary doesn't allow team to improve
2017 season: Former baseball player-turned-quarterback needs time to develop
2018 season: 5th round pick beats out baseball reject, also needs time to develop
2019 season: (dbair tribute) The refs screwed us
2020 season: Garrett is in 6th year of new deal and his career record is below .500, who cares at this point?

This game probably really is it... But I expect us to win. I'm as confident as I've been since that Giants game. Could be wrong though because the Eagles are a good team, and it's been shown that our great road record this year is because other than Seattle, we've played a bunch of crap teams on the road, and better ones at home. (Though still not good.)

Some stats on the implications this week:
NFL Week 15 Playoff Implications: The Chances A Coin Flip Will Decide The Postseason | FiveThirtyEight

The Cowboys’ playoff chances climb to 84 percent with a road victory but drop to 36 percent with a loss. An Eagles victory would all but assure them a playoff berth, resulting in a 96 percent probability of both postseason play and a division title. An Eagles loss and the playoffs become a 50-50 proposition. That’s enough swing to make the Dallas-Philadelphia matchup one of the most important of the week.

BTW, this is as good a place as any to put it, but I was looking at Football Outsiders' DVOA this morning and they have us as the 13th best team in the league, 14th weighted to recent results. That's a #6 offense, #28 defense, and #13 special teams. Nothing too different from past years. Only saving grace for us is that the NFC sucks this year compared to the AFC. There are eight AFC teams ahead of us but only four NFC teams.

Just to emphasize that this team isn't really as vastly improved as some claim.

If we get in the playoffs, I am okay with bringing him back. At least there is something tangible to show that there is improvement.

What will drive me insane is missing the playoffs yet still keeping this guy.

Dooms, where's the ban button on this thing?

Really though, Jerry will be more than justified in it then. Doesn't mean he's the best coach we could get, though. What does he add? What does he even do anymore other than take Jerry's orders in stride?

Lookit, I don't like the guy, but I want a playoff game and if that means keeping him around, so be it. It means he at least did something to justify coming back. If he doesn't it is a maddening bunch of fucking bullshit about "progress" which is basically make-believe.

Call me a cheap whore.

And to clarify, when I say make the playoffs, I don't mean backing in, but earning it.

I agree with this.. If he earns it and we're in because of it then I can understand bringing him back. But if we miss and have some collapse at the end here then no fuckin way. You gotta go in a different direction.

This quote gives a little optimism:

I mean, we all know he's coming back regardless. The "Jason has some say in it" probably just means that Garrett has to sign the contract to be here, too.

The coach is not suppose to be an unstable draft pick. He needs to lead fom the beginning. Who is doing the training here?
