A familiar face appears to be returning to the Eagles.

According to a report by the NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora (and then reported by Philly.com), former defensive assistant Steve Spagnuolo is expected to be back with the team before the end of the week.

LaCanfora, citing NFL sources, wrote that Spagnuolo will replace embattled defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, perhaps not in name, but as the leader of the Eagles defense.

The Eagles had no comment. Eagles head coach Andy Reid is on vacation and various reporters (including Geoff Mosher and Jeff McLane) who cover the team say no announcement will be made before he returns.

Spagnuolo, fired as head coach of the St. Louis Rams last week after three seasons at the helm, spent eight seasons with the Eagles before leaving in 2007 to become the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator. He guided the Giants to their 2007 Super Bowl upset over the previously unbeaten Patriots.

If Spagnuolo does not replace Castillo as coordinator he could be named an assistant head coach along with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, says Philly.com. If Castillo is out in his current position, he could fill the vacancy at secondary coach after Johnnie Lynn was fired last week.

Just talked to solid #eagles source. Kind of doused Spagnuolo rumors. Not saying it won't happen, just not something really brewing now.

Well they beat us twice and finished ahead of us in the division. This move just widens the gap.

No it doesnt. And they had the exact same record as we did. They signed a ton of big name guys and were supposed to be a super bowl team, and had a worse record than last year. We didnt sign hardly anyone and finished 2 games better than last year.

Funny as I seem to remember as to how they beat us twice in 2008, and they failed to make the playoffs, and they sup[posedly had gotten better but what happened the following year? I mean we are referring to history, right?

Ah dbair. Cynthim is the exact same guy that said the Eagles with Vick, Maclin, and Jackson would win MULTIPLE Super Bowls.

Same record with two head to head wins means they beat us in the division.

They made at dumb move at DC and it cost them as their defense was terrible. They played poorly but still managed to go 5-1 in the division. Bringing in a quality DC like Spagnuolo should fix the problems that had this year.

Wow, two games better than the year our starting QB went out mid-season and we fired out HC/DC. Shoot for the stars, dbair!

Was far from the only reason they were lousy. Vick was lousy almost all year. Their OL was mediocre almost all year. Desean jackson was lousy all year.

Considering where we were the day Wade got fired, making all the changes we made on the OL and defense and without any benefit of a real offseason, it was a bigger accomplishment. Certainly better than going from division champions/super bowl favorites with tons of big name additions to two games worse

There are no ties in football.

Their offense was still 8th in points and 4th in total yards.

Considering your blatant homerism, sure sure. We slightly closed the gap by being mediocre instead of simply awful, but Philly is widening it again by fixing a huge mistake they made last year assuming they actually land Spagnuolo. It sucks watching a rival make the moves you wish Jerry Jones was smart enough to make.

You learn that from McNabb?

They do have ties in regular season games, and 8-8 is equal to 8-8. same amount of wins, same amount of losses.

Their offense was still 8th in points and 4th in total yards.

So?

I dont want Jerry making any decisions with the staff, Garrett should be making them. And last year they hired a guy that was expected to be precisely what you are praising this potential Philly move for- they hired a highly regarded DC. (Ryan)

dbair. If there are two 8-8 teams who finish tied for the 6th playoff spot, they don't just say that both teams can't go to the playoffs because they have identical records.
