Stephen Colbert Trolls Trump Administration With Some 'Big News' Of His Own

Late Show” host Stephen Colbert isn’t feeling very reassured by the latest news on aviation safety from the administration of President Donald Trump.

Colbert pointed to a tweet in which Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said he had “Big News.”

“Talked to the DOGE team,” Duffy wrote, referring to tech billionaire Elon Musk’s controversial Department of Government Efficiency initiative. “They are going to plug in to help upgrade our aviation system.”

Colbert joked that he might not be flying anytime soon.

“I’ve also got big news: I just bought an Amtrak rail pass,” he replied. “Trains very rarely associated with the words ‘plunge’ and ‘plummet’.”

Musk added that his team would be making “safety upgrades” to the air traffic control system.

“Great,” Colbert sarcastically replied. “Because when I think of Elon Musk, I think ‘air safety’.”

With that, he rolled footage of one of Musk’s SpaceX rockets exploding.

Check it out in his Thursday night monologue:

So Trump proposed eliminating taxes on tips, social security, and overtime pays and of course the response is off the wall.

Here is an analysis claiming these tax cuts will cost $5T to $11T over the net 10 years.

https://www.crfb.org/blogs/trump-tax-priorities-total-5-11-trillion

Notice the item on tips? It says this tax break will cost $100B to $550 billion over 10 years. I am looking at the IRS stats spread sheet for individual income taxes reported. According to the IRS in 2022, the latest available data, only $245 million was reported as tips income. Since those getting tipped are normally at the lower end of the tax rate table, we can assume they paid at most 20% tax on this tip income, or about $49 million per year. Over 10 years that about $490 million and nowhere near $100B. but its worse than that because only about $102 million is taxed today. The rest goes untaxed because filers presumably do not make enough money to pay taxes. Think party time workers who collect tips.

One other thing I would point out. We are still operating under the same tax cuts Trump assed during his first term. While this analysis claims extending the cuts will cost between $3.9 and $4.8 trillion the fact is we collected $4.9T in tax revenues last year, a record high for the US government. Tax cuts stimulate growth. Instead of looking at tax cuts as a cost - they are not a cost - we should look at the stimulating effect of tax cuts on the economy as a whole.

My preference is to end all income taxes which are a means of controlling the people and return to use taxes and tariffs for revenue.

One thing I didnt like about Trumps tax changes is they capped the real estate tax exemption at 10K, which probably costs me 3k per year (my property taxes are ridiculous!)
