My position on Canada is simple. They are a sovereign nation and our immediate neighbor to the north. Talking about making them a state might have started as a joke, but the joke is over. Stop talking about Canada as if because they are weak and we are strong we should just roll over them. Leave it alone now.
My position on Greenland is similar. I get the strategic importance. Greenland is a potential site for advanced missile defense bases. It is also a potential source of rare earth minerals which China is trying to get control of globally. Denmark has already taken steps to block China from gaining control of Greenland's rare earth mining operations. Denmark is also a NATO ally. I believe we could negotiate some kind of agreement with Denmark to strengthen the barriers preventing China from accessing Greenland's natural resources. At the same time the people of Greenland, even though there are few of them, want autonomy from Denmark. This is an issue we should stay out of just like we want others to stay out of our politics. Again, Denmark is an ally. I am all for the people of Greenland determining their own fate and government, but it is not our battle to fight. Do you realize if Greenland breaks from Denmark it will be America providing them expensive defense forces to protect their natural resources? They will becomes another recipients of US tax dollars.
Then there is the Panama Canal. Carter was an idiot for giving it away. He was an idiot on many things. But he did give it away. Now if Panama has violated the agreement by allowing another country to operate the canal, then Trump has a valid point. A deal is a deal. But we have to be careful. If Panama is already being courted by China, Trump's bloviating could cause them to turn more to China for support. Every country has pride and I am sure Panama does too. Make the point about ripping off America, but diplomacy is the first move, not the hammer.
Greenland's resources and the Panama Canal are definitely issues that need to be addressed. But there are more pressing issues that should come first.
And let's not forget about renaming the Gulf of Mexico. This is just clownish American arrogance. It is exactly the kind of nonsense Democrats complain about and rightly so.
