Tony Romo has made excellent progress and will soon move into the next stage of his rehabilitation, sources said.
The Cowboys quarterback had surgery to relieve the pressure of a herniated disk on Dec. 27, two days before the team ended the regular season with a loss to Philadelphia. Basic core and stabilization exercises are the first step in the rehab process.
These isometrics, which focus on building flexibility and strength in the lower back with little to no movement of the spine, are common in the first six weeks after back surgery. Romo is said to be feeling good and doing well with the exercises, particularly over the last four weeks.
There is no definitive timetable, but he will likely be cleared in the next week or two to move to the next phase, which includes some low impact work.
