Tony Romo attempts to sneak into team drills by wearing Caleb Hanie’s jersey

IRVING — Tony Romo almost pulled off a quarterback sneak Tuesday.

The Dallas Cowboys’ franchise QB, who has been limited as he recovers from December back surgery, tried to sneak his way into team drills for the first time this offseason.

Romo traded jerseys with backup Caleb Hanie and got under center, but Cowboys coach Jason Garrett quickly noticed Hanie’s jersey was “a little snug” and told Romo to get back on the side and out of harm’s way.

“I think any time you’re getting healthier and getting ready to go, you kind of want to ramp it up,” Romo said. “But we’ll have plenty of time for that here soon. As a competitor, you just want to get back out there.”

Romo did get under center for some pre-practice work with the first-team offense but was later limited to individual drills. Indications are he will be a full participant when training camp starts next month.

“I almost snuck in,” Romo said with a smile. “I feel pretty good. I could go. I was going to take some seven-on-seven reps but I don’t know how much that really helps, just to get those three or four reps today.”

Before pulling on Hanie’s jersey, Romo attempted to wear Brandon Weeden’s No. 3 uniform. The problem: Romo weighs 15-20 pounds more than Weeden.

“He said it was a little too snug because he wears an offensive lineman jersey,” Weeden joked.

“He’s a competitive guy,” Garrett added. “He wants to play. He wants to be out there. We have the conversation every morning about how many reps he’s going to get, and the answer is the same.

“We’re going to get through this minicamp, he’s going to continue doing what he’s been doing. Do the walk-through type stuff, do the individual work and then once we get to training camp we think he’s going to be more ready to go.”

I like that Tony is raring to get back on the field and practice with the team. Yes, the jersey was tight because he put on some weight. I imagine that was attributed to the fact he had back surgery and was under strict orders not to do any kind of exercise that might hinder his full recovery. He is not the problem with this team though.

I'd rather hear some good news about our shitty, NFL record setting worst defense ever. That might be a while though.......... :paper

I wish my mom was chopped up with a chainsaw in a c-train in front of me when I was a kid, then the cop that found me adopted me, saw that I was going to be a serial killer, then taught me a code that involved killing stupid fucking homers.

What I take from this is that the players disrespect the head coach so much that they aren't afraid to make a mockery of practice.

He's another Brett Favre, like a kid out there!

I don't really give a shit, since at least if he is doing that, he must feel pretty good and is getting healthy.

I wouldn't comment in the thread at CZ about this. It would have been a hassle and I didn't feel like arguing.

Words of wisdom. The damn homers have took the fun out of being a fan.
