It’s no secret that the Dallas Cowboys need to upgrade their secondary, and Rob Ryan wholeheartedly agrees.

Alex Dunlap of the Austin Chronicle caught up with Ryan at the Senior Bowl, and asked the Cowboys defensive coordinator who he was focused on: “I’m only looking at DBs. Nothing else. DBs.”

Dunlap went on to say that Ryan has a particular interest in Leonard Johnson, a cornerback from Iowa State who could be an option in the 2nd or 3rd round.

It’s tough to say just how much say Ryan has in the Cowboys draft plans, but if he’s this blunt about their needs to the media, it’s safe to assume he’s going to be hounding Jerry Jones over the next few months about the issue.

The problem the Cowboys have, however, is that they may be stuck in no-mans land in the 1st round if they hope to address their secondary at that point. Dre Kirkpatrick would be an obvious target, but could be off the board by pick No. 14. There are a number of potential late 1st-round cornerback prospects, but anyone other than Kirkpatrick or Morris Claiborne would be a significant reach unless the Cowboys were to trade back.

There is one other name to keep on eye on, however: Janoris Jenkins. Based purely on talent, Jenkins is a top-15 prosect and would be a great fit in Dallas’ secondary. But most teams will drop him, or completely remove him, from their draft boards due to character issues.

Jerry Jones has shown a willingness to consider troubled-but-talented prospects in the past. He recently drafted Dez Bryant in the 1st round, when many others had dismissed him for off-field issues. And he’s made similar moves in free agency (Pacman Jones, Terrell Owens, etc).

I guess we gotta remember the Ryan's philosophy, they think they can scheme pressure but they can't scheme guys who can cover for more than a second.

Mayock had Johnson listed as one of his top 5 CB's in the draft, too.. behind only Claiborne, Jenkins, and Dennard. If we could get him in the second or third that seems like it would be a steal.

Roy mentioned it already but Mayock loves Johnson. I want to go back and watch some of his games, especially his match up against Justin Blackmon.

DCUforums: @BryanBroaddus Please tell me all the talk that the #Cowboys really like Janoris Jenkins is BS.

BryanBroaddus:
@DCUforums You can't discount anyone until all those questions are answered. I think it will be hard for Jenkins to answer them all.

2012 is going to be a huge season not jsut for us, but also for Ryan

If the Cowboys invest the money and draft picks into the defense, and then its still no better than medicore then Ryan can kiss his DC job here goodbye, and probably say goodbye to any NFL HC opportunities he might have gotten.

that is the thing, if we go young on defense and bring in say 5 draft picks along with butler, udrafted guys and then maybe a young ufa signing.....its basically not fair to ryan and the staff if they struggle while learning the defense and the league.

that is the main reason why I dont want ryan here. I think this is a huge offseason and it should be the offseason that lays the groundwork for the next 5 years or so, especially on the defense....so I want a better coordinator here to be steering that ship.

and rob ryan is not getting a head coaching job anywhere anytime soon.

I'm not ready to write off Ryan. Get him a safety who can cover ground and a pass rusher opposite Ware. I think we will see a big difference. If Jerry sells us on how Barry Church and Victor Butler are ready to be stars than Ryan is screwed.

I strongly suspect there will be free agent additions in addition to draft picks. It wont be just oen or the other.

Yeah, I've cooled on that notion considerably as well.

Thought he'd be here for a year. Two, max.

But with his brother struggling, and his units not being able to back up his talk.... no, I think he's a DC for a while.

I told you all that like a billion times when you were all worried about Ryan leaving after one year.

I think Dallas needs veteran leadership in the secondary. Fuck a rookie give me a guy who can be a coach on the field. Dont need a superstar just somebody who knows what theyre doing.

Just say no to DB's with 16 starts and 0 passes defensed or interceptions
