I'll go ahead and use logic here. They met and reports said STL decided to go in a different direction. Their philosophy is to hire a coach who is capable of winning more than 8 games.

Actually, they wanted him to run the 4-3 and not bring in his own staff. Being a guy with a backbone and some pride he chose reject the offer knowing it could be his last shot at a DC job this season.

so why did he even interview for it...he knew they were already running the 4-3 and had invested heavily in 4-3 DL's the past several years...he also knew it was highly unlikely he was gonna get to take any of the coaches from Dallas with him

basically that isnt what happened...what happened is his family friend was gonna do him a favor and hire him, then looked at how shitty the tape was of Ryan's defenses in Dallas, Oakland and Cleveland and decided they could do far better
