The Cowboys have been very impressed with the play of rookie Dak Prescott but continue to plan to go with Tony Romo as their starting quarterback when he returns from a back injury, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. This according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

One source asserted that there is "zero chance" that Romo does not start when cleared, pointing to the commitment owner Jerry Jones has made to the veteran quarterback and the bond between the two. The Cowboys' brass believes it will have a more robust, well-rounded offense with Romo back under center, and that he is best positioned to cull the maximum production out of their array of weapons in the passing game.

Prescott has done an excellent job of managing the game and avoiding mistakes -- he has yet to throw an interception -- and is viewed as the quarterback of the future. He is poised and confident and has received high accolades within in the organization and outside of it. But the Cowboys are running a constricted version of the offense for him and astutely simplifying some things for him, and its scope should expand significantly with Romo back.

Romo is throwing regularly now with considerably more zip on his ball, coming back from his preseason back injury, and remains on track to play Week 8 after their bye. Top receiver Dez Bryant is most likely to return by then as well, sources said.

If they truly have already made a decision without seeing the next two games and without seeing Romo practice once after being cleared, it just speaks to how dysfunctional the whole franchise is.

That said, I think the next two weeks will definitely help tell the tale.

The tale is the village idiot isnt going to leave his 17 million dollar QB on the bench even if he a shell of his former self.

I see the argument: you can open up the playbook more with Romo out there. But what I don't understand is why can't they slowly open it up for Dak as the season goes along? It only benefits him and the club in the long run. And essentially, that is all that matters.

If Dak wins this game and wins at Green Bay you gotta leave him in there. Lie to the media if necessary to save face. Just say that Romo isn't at 100% until it becomes absolutely necessary for him to go back in.

Or will you actually be closing it some, since you can forget any bootlegs or rollouts and for sure, forget any planned QB runs with Romo.

If I was the Cowboys head coach or GM I would simply say we will evaluate the situation once Tony is healthy. Once it gets out that Romo is practicing, I would change the narrative to we aren't sure who will be starting this week, we are still evaluating Romo's health. That way, teams have to waste valuable practice time preparing for both.

Once Romo is back, he starts IMO, but they should still put Dak out there on plays so that the defense has to adjust and it keeps him involved. It opens up a ton of possibilities.

Doesn't hurt to put a little doubt in the players mind either, make them always compete and feel on edge not knowing their job is totally secure.

Walsh did that with Montana and Young and it seemed to work out pretty well.

But we all know jeri doesn't like anyone to feel uncomfortable,so that'll never happen

I hope this happens and Romo gets re-injured in his first game back.

i think that's exactly what's going to happen. and hopefully romo will be healthy enough to start doing commercials full time by the offseason.

What do "healthy" mean?

If Dak continues to play very well vs. the Packers, you give him the start after the bye .... so Romo gets a little more time for healing and knocking off the rust.

If Dak & the offense continues to dominate vs. the Eagles (first game after the bye), I don't see how you pull Dak unless he and/or the offense has a poor game.

I actually don't understand the playbook argument. Yes, you can a variety of pass patterns with Romo, but I haven't seen a throw that Dak can't make. That, coupled with the fact that we actually add a dimension with the read option, I think the playbook is actually more robust with Dak.

Yes, this.

Therefore rendering Romo pretty much superfluous and as you point out, actually more limited of a offense and things a defense needs to prepare for, with him in there.

So, the plan is Romo returning vs the Eagles? I give him a quarter.

Ddnt hear the interview on the Fan today but Stephen Jones was supposedly back peddling on Romo starting versus Philly. Something about Dak playing so well they have the luxury of waiting til Romo is 110%.

Sounds like they think Dak may continue to start after bye. We'll see for how long after that.

If we somehow win both these next two games and Dak plays reasonably well, unless Dak gets hurt the Romo era is officially over I think.
