I'd think, if this is true, they have to.

For Spygate the Patriots lost a 1st and 2nd with a conditional 3rd and 4th (if memory serves) in addition to 500k for the HC and 150k for the franchise.

That was for stealing signals.

This is for intent to cause harm, and paying your players for it. The NFL has to make a statement here. I would be surprised if the Redskins and Saints were not gutted with draft picks and fined out the wazoo.

They should strip a 1st, 2nd and their franchise tag rights for this offseason. The Saints would lose Nicks and Brees then. Skins don't have any good players, but they'd lose RGIII.

I think that's sending a nice signal.

that would hurt the league.

i.e. that would hurt the money.

i.e. that would take money from the owners pockets...

so remember who the commish works for and put two and two together. this will probably drag out as long as possible until the league has a bigger story and they can bury the minimal penalty on a busy occasion.

I cant imagine they do anything that would affect either the redskins or saints to retain or acquire good players....

Love it....Even if they don't lose a 1st rounder weaken them so they won't be able to come close to what the Browns can offer.:YES

Might be the dumbest thing I've read all day. There will be direct penalties, and they will be more severe than what the Pats got for Spygate for two reasons:

1) the league explicitly sends a yearly memo to state that players are not allowed to earn non-contract bonuses
2) the organizations supported the idea of intentionally injuring other players

There will be personal lawsuits filed, and even the players association will go apeshit about it.

before they do any of this they are going to have to show that it actually affected the games and prove it actually happened and which games. They were able to do this with spygate for the most part.

this deal is going to be a little different. There will be heavy fines for the saints and possibly the redskins I imagine.

but as far as messing with their ability to keep there players or draft picks I just dont think it is going to be as substantial.

this stuff is going to have to be proven to have been used in games on specificplays by specific players which directly affected the outcome of the game....i have a feeling that is going to be very difficult to do and will be very hard to accomplish in the next 60 days.

Imagine what tom benson and dan snyder would do if they lost rg3 and drew brees because of this? They would throw a fit.

if it ends up being as dire and intentional as it is being implied, sean payton should be fired tomorrow morning and so should williams, mickey loomis also. That would be benson and the owners making a stand......no idea what snyder could do? take the tires away from joe gibbs cars?

I just dont see it affecting either team to where they lose brees or rg3...

1) Players were earning money to injure other players. It doesn't matter what the game outcomes were. There are already enough violations simply in receiving money illegally for the deeds.

2) 30 owners who actually adhered to the rules (or at least weren't caught breaking them) will surely trump the two who were caught. Benson and Snyder have no case here. They just have to beg for leniency.

Your logic is so flawed overall. Goodell is not just a complete puppet.

Oh and by the way Williams himself admitted to guilt and apologized in a statement tonight. There's nothing more to prove. Now it's just a matter of how bad to ass sex them.

“I want to express my sincere regret and apology to the NFL, Mr. Benson, and the New Orleans Saints fans for my participation in the ‘pay for performance’ program while I was with the Saints,” Williams said. “It was a terrible mistake, and we knew it was wrong while we were doing it. Instead of getting caught up in it, I should have stopped it. I take full responsibility for my role. I am truly sorry. I have learned a hard lesson and I guarantee that I will never participate in or allow this kind of activity to happen again.”

There will be a long investigation, most likely. Chances are no decision/punishment prior to the draft.

Shortly after the news broke that longtime NFL assistant Gregg Williams orchestrated a system of bounties during his time as defensive coordinator of the Saints, a report surfaced that Williams did the same thing as defensive coordinator of the Redskins. But Williams’s boss in Washington, Joe Gibbs, says that comes as news to him.

“Just let me say this: I’m not aware of anything like this when I was coaching there,” Gibbs told the Washington Post. “I would never ask a player to hurt another player. Never.”

That may sound tough to swallow — could the head coach really be that out of touch about what’s going on in his locker room? — but Gibbs insists it’s the truth.

“I wouldn’t ever tell a player to hurt somebody,” Gibbs said. “They may say, ‘Well, Joe would know, because everybody else knew.’ But I didn’t know. I’m shocked by this.”

Bolstering Gibbs’ claim of ignorance is the fact that he was always very hands-off with his defense. Gibbs was an offensive coach who delegated everything on the defensive side of the ball to his assistants. As just one example, when Williams decided to pay tribute to Sean Taylor by putting only 10 players on the field for the Redskins’ first defensive play after Taylor’s death, Gibbs knew nothing about it.

And Gibbs says he knew nothing about bounties, either.

That senile old man couldn't even keep track of timeouts. I doubt he knew what was going on around.

Needs to shut up and stick to silly redneck car racing.

Do you people even read?

There was already a two year investigation conducted. They released the results of that.

This case is currently at the punishment stage.

Just read an article (title) that said the Saints coaches could be suspended.

Have you read anything about draft picks being lost?

It's all speculation at this point but the consistent opinion is that the punishment will be more severe than Spygate for the reasons I stated above. Tom Benson knew of it and asked for it to be stopped but did nothing to actively ensure that would occur. Sean Payton knew and turned the other cheek. Surely the Saints GM will be canned for going against the orders of his own boss, but Goodell is going to have pressure from other owners and the players association in this case.

Plus, it's just much worse to be paying non contract bonuses (huge salary cap violation) and actively trying to injure other players than it is to video tape some practices. Spygate resulted in lost draft picks, so the automatic assumption is the same here.

Stopped counting the number of pundits that mentioned the Redskins will not be punished retroactively, sorry VA.
