17. Dallas Cowboys (8-8)*: Louis Nix III, DT, Notre Dame.

With or without Monte Kiffin running the defense, the Cowboys would be wise to add someone like Nix. The massive 340-pound tackle simply plugs up the middle, be it from the 1-tech or directly over the center. Impending free agent Jason Hatcher may be on his way out, so finding Nix here could be even more of a boon.

32. Seattle Seahawks (13-3): Kony Ealy, DE, Missouri.

The Seahawks proved last offseason that they never can have too many versatile pass-rushers. That’s exactly what they would get in Ealy, whose stock climbed throughout the season. There is a definite possibility Ealy — and his teammate Michael Sam — come off the board earlier (Dallas looks like a fit). Should he last, the Seahawks might not hesitate to snatch up another dangerous defender.

Despite having DeMarcus Ware on the roster, the Cowboys inexplicably finished in the bottom 10 of sacks this season. Ware playing hurt was a problem, but there's no one else who could consistently get to the quarterback.

Monte Kiffin is likely to be fired, so it remains to be seen what sort of defense Dallas will run. Kony Ealy makes sense for both the 4-3 and 3-4, and he fills a need across from Ware.

Brett Smith, QB, Wyoming declared early. I've seen some people say 2nd which seems a little high. I'd certainly look at him in the middle rounds.

I do not get what people see in Ealy. Not a horrible player, but certainly not a cure for what ails this defense.

A light in the pants edge rusher is not going to solve the problem.

The worst part of this entire defense was Nick Hayden. And no, fricking Tyrone Crawford and Ben Bass are not solutions.

DT is a bigger need for sure. I'm sure Hatcher walks so they really have no one there. Ben Bass, Nick Hayden and a crippled Crawford I guess.

I just wonder if DE will be the better value in 1.

The worst part of this entire defense was Nick Hayden. And no, fricking Tyrone Crawford and Ben Bass are not solutions.

Yeah Hayden was graded pretty low as I recall, but at least he managed to stay out there and gave the effort. Would be a decent rotational guy perhaps.

You have no idea whether Crawford and/or Bass are answers to anything. Maybe they will be. Have to wait and see. Would be a huge bonus for us if one (or both of them) could be solid contributors next year (as they were expected to be this past yr)

This team sucks at drafting needs. They suck at drafting in general, but when Jerry gets the idea that he has "a need," it's usually that he thinks it's the only need on the roster. Then we end up overpaying. Trading up and overdrafting for Frederick, trading up for Claiborne, trading for Roy Williams, overdrafting for Escobar, it just happens all the time. We never just stand pat and take the best available player. We never follow our draft board.

So while DE may be the better value in Round 1, I expect Jerry to try to be a river boat gambler and try to fill his perceived "needs."

Nick Hayden as a 4th DT that plays about 20 snaps a game--good. Nick Haden as a 16 game starter--bad. very bad.

I disagree about Fredericks being over drafted. He's been one of the bright spots on the OL. The problem I feel is that we didn't get great value in that trade down. We should have gotten more and better picks. The rest, I totally agree.

Nevis isn't here anymore, they cut him. I cant remember if he was cut for that DT they signed off someone's practice squad (Kearse) or another guy. But Nevis is definitely out.

Frederick wasn't overdrafted. Based on his play, he was a tremendous value where we ended up getting him. And with Terrance Williams likely starting opp Dez next yr, we got two quality starters via the trade down to take Frederick.

I don't think we should have picked Escobar based on other areas we had needs at and a few of the others guys available, but he wasn't overdrafted either. He was supposed to be a 2nd rd pick.

DE is a need. DT is a need. Safety is probably a need. OLB is probably a need.
