That would garuntee we don't select a corner with the 9th pick.

It also means that if you have two QBs and a WR go in the first 8, that's five picks. That would leave Dareus, Fairley, Quinn, Bowers and Miller. At least two of them would have to be available at 9.

Sunday roundup on Newton

Every pre-draft season, there's one player around whom a tremendous amount of speculation -- and about whom a tremendous amount of media coverage -- occurs. Last season, it happened to be a Heisman trophy-winning quarterback from an SEC powerhouse that had won a BCS title (Tim Tebow). This season, it's a Heisman trophy-winning quarterback from an SEC powerhouse that has won a BCS title: Cam Newton.

Over the past week, Newton held his pro day, which was attended by a legion of NFL executives, scouts and coaches as well as a throng of media, and we learned that at least nine teams will be visiting with him for further investigations.

Sunday, Dan Pompei of National Football Post wrote that there are two teams that appear very interested in Newton: the Buffalo Bills (who pick third overall) and the Minnesota Vikings (who pick twelfth).

The Bills may have a chance at Newton with that third pick if they are indeed sold on him. The debate on their drafting him has raged since before the draft order was even set, and it'll continue until that fateful night in late April. As for the Vikings, it would appear unlikely that Newton will fall to them at No. 12, though not impossible. Any of the teams in the Top 11 that is interested in drafting a developmental QB has additional needs elsewhere. And it's no certainty that the Vikes would take him, either, though he'd likely be a better option to be their starter this fall than the incumbents.

Pats going OL at No. 17?

The New England Patriots have a number of directions they could go with the No. 17 overall pick this April, including trading down. But there has been a buzz that the team may use either that pick -- inherited from the Oakland Raiders in the Richard Seymour deal -- or their own at No. 28 overall in order to bolster their offensive line. Left tackle Matt Light is slated to hit unrestricted free agency, Logan Mankins is angry again, and Stephen Neal has retired.

One option for the team, as suggested by Ian R. Rapoport of the Boston Herald, is Florida interior lineman Mike Pouncey, twin brother of Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey.

For the counter-argument, ESPN NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper, Jr. had the Pats drafting for the other side of the ball with that pick in his latest mock draft:

- Tim Kavanagh

Mel Kiper, Jr.
Purdue's Kerrigan goes here

"Ryan Kerrigan answered a lot of questions about his athleticism in Indy and has shown that he might not be the tweener many believe he is, a player seemingly stuck between a 3-4 OLB and a 4-3 DE. While I don't see him as a guy who'll be dropping back and covering very well early on, Kerrigan is smart and simply has a gift for getting to the quarterback. New England needs a guy like him for all the passes they'll continue to face when up in games. Kerrigan led the nation in tackles for loss last year and shows good leverage against the run to go with his obvious pass-rushing skill set."

Where does Watkins land?

Friday, we passed along a mock draft that had the Chicago Bears taking Baylor offensive lineman Danny Watkins with their first-round pick. Watkins worked out for the Bears and the Cincinnati Bengals privately last Thursday, per Draftinsider.net, and the site reports that the St. Louis Rams, Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens will witness a workout this Thursday.

Though Watkins played left tackle in college, he's expected to slide over to guard at the NFL level and ESPN's Scouts, Inc. has graded him out as the second-best interior lineman behind Florida's Mike Pouncey.

When it comes to specific draft positioning, the Bengals and Broncos would likely be considering him as their second-rounder, while the Ravens and Bears might like him in the late first. As for the Rams, much of the known world believes they'll take a wide receiver at No. 14 overall, but if A.J. Green and Julio Jones are both gone, they may elect to trade down somewhere closer to where Watkins is generally graded.

In his most recent mock draft, Todd McShay sent Watkins to the New England Patriots at No. 28 overall, while Mel Kiper, Jr. sent him to the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 31:

- Tim Kavanagh

--

Mel Kiper, Jr.
Steelers could target interior OL again

"Pittsburgh needs help on the offensive line and Watkins is a versatile player who can play multiple positions for them. They hit a home run drafting a versatile offensive lineman in Round 1 last year and Watkins offers more of that. The Steelers could also target the defensive line, but the offensive side of the ball is a bigger need, and, like the Jets, they can add help to the front of their 3-4 set with a later pick."

--

Todd McShay
Watkins would fill a need

"The Patriots got their defensive end earlier in the first, and no pass-rusher or running back is worth taking here. Watkins is a fast-rising line prospect who plays with an edge, and although he played tackle in college, he is a better fit inside at the NFL level."

Panthers examining QBs

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers will stage a workout with quarterback prospect Ryan Mallett, according to Aaron Wilson of National Football Post. Per Wilson, a number of NFL coaches and executives were at Mallett's pro day last week, including Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider, Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, Tennessee Titans QB coach Dowell Loggains, Panthers QB coach Mike Shula and Cincinnati Bengals QB coach Ken Zampese.

As Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill Herald observes, this means that the Panthers will spend time with three of the top QBs available in this year's draft class: Mallett on Tuesday, Cam Newton will visit with the team on Wednesday and Blaine Gabbert's pro day is Thursday.

Regarding the last of that triumvirate, Carl Moritz of Sporting News noted that Gabbert has a shot to be the No. 1 pick should he impress at his pro day and subsequent visit. At this point in the process, teams have a framework for their draft board, but slight tweaks are still possible over the last few weeks.

As we know, the Panthers go with Gabbert in Mel Kiper, Jr.'s latest mock draft, though Mel also addressed the possibility of a team trading up with the Panthers:

- Tim Kavanagh

--

Mel Kiper, Jr.
With rookie cap, No. 1 a coveted pick again

"There's a thought process here that goes beyond need. For one, Gabbert impressed in Indy, and his pro day next week will help determine if he has the potential to land here. Two, I expect any labor deal that gets worked out will create a rookie salary scale that limits the massive bonuses for top picks, making it easier to trade up and down in the draft, which has become increasingly difficult. So it makes sense for Carolina to project that it could take one of the top quarterbacks and open up the trade options, in essence, saying, "To guarantee a shot at the one you prefer, talk to us." Lastly, while I still believe in Jimmy Clausen's chances given his youth, Ron Rivera could not be blamed for targeting his own vision of a franchise quarterback with a pick here or via free agency. It's a leverage position now, but also a potential pick. Part of it is up to Gabbert."

Concern on Bowers

Initially believed to be in the mix to be the NFL draft's No. 1 overall pick, Clemson defensive end Da'Quan Bowers has seen his perceived stock slip recently. Though teams maintain their actual draft boards under a tight cloak of secrecy -- well, most of the time, anyways -- there has been a buzz lately that he may drop down several positions on the night of April 28.

The main cause for the fall is Bowers' health status. According to NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock, Bowers indicated to several NFL teams that he'd be ready to perform at the Clemson pro day on March 10. March 10 came and Bowers did not participate, indicating instead that he'd stage a private workout on April 1.

Mayock noted that Bowers' lack of transparency on his health issue may become a factor. "I've gotten an awful lot of phone calls from people around the league who think that there's more there than what was reported initially," Mayock said. "Every team shares information from the combine, and ultimately it will come out. But I think there was maybe a little bit more than met the eye at the combine."

From his vantage point, ESPN's Mel Kiper, Jr. foresees Bowers sliding all the way to the Tennessee Titans at No. 8 overall:

- Tim Kavanagh

--

Mel Kiper, Jr.
Stars align for Tennessee

"A tremendous natural pass-rusher, Bowers falls a little because of needs elsewhere before this pick and because of some very small but lingering questions about his knee. He was unable to work out in Indy as a precaution with his recovery. Tennessee targeted its pass rush in the first round last year, but Bowers simply represents too much value at this position and with the pass rush still in need of an upgrade, he provides immediate help as well."

Ravens eyeing pass-rushers

The Baltimore Ravens play a complex defensive scheme that makes use of varying formations (calling them a 3-4 team is an oversimplification). But one thing is true no matter how they line up: they had trouble generating edge pressure on opposing quarterbacks in 2010. As a result, finding players that can fulfill that need is a priority this offseason.

With free agency a figment of our imagination at this point, the draft remains the primary method by which teams can address their needs and wants. According to ESPN AFC North blogger James Walker, the Ravens will visit with a particular draft prospect in the near future that can help them out in any defensive scheme: Purdue product Ryan Kerrigan.

As we know, Sergio Kindle was supposed to be that pass-rushing dynamo to complement Terrell Suggs, but his struggles with off-field issues -- healthwise and legally -- have blurred his future.

From the NFL draft combine at the tail end of February, the fellows from ESPN's Scouts, Inc. noted that Kerrigan was improving on his capabilities to fulfill the non-pass-rushing duties of an OLB:

- Tim Kavanagh

--

Insider NFL Draft Blog
He's getting there

"Kerrigan did not perform as well as hoped during the week of the Senior Bowl, when he lined up at outside linebacker, and he doesn't have elite athletic ability. However, he did a better job of moving in space on Monday, and teams looking for help at outside linebacker late in the first round should take note of his improved body control in space."

Falcons have WRs on the mind

Sunday, we pondered whether the Atlanta Falcons will do as everyone thinks they'll do on the night of April 28 and draft a defensive end with their first-round draft pick. There's also the possibility of trading down if none of the options suits their fancy when it's time to make their selection.

But a pass-rushing DE is not the team's only area of need as the 2011 offseason continues. A secondary receiving target behind Roddy White is also needed, and the draft is one of the three means by which the team can address that shortcoming. ESPN NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas has his finger on the Falcons' collective pulse, and he passes along word Monday afternoon that they'll be visiting with two wide receiver prospects in the near future: East Carolina's Dwayne Harris and Vidal Hazleton of Cincinnati. Harris appears to be in the range of players that will be available in the middle rounds while Hazleton is more of a wild card due to injuries that kept him away from working out at the NFL draft combine.

As for the Falcons' first-rounder, a WR is certainly possible, though it would have a great deal to do with the behavior of the teams drafting around them. The Baltimore Ravens may also draft a WR, and they sit one spot ahead of the Falcons at No. 26 overall.

An OLB for Houston?

The Texans' conversion from a 4-3 defensive front to Wade Phillips' 3-4 configuration is expected to be accelerated by the team's 2011 draft class, and they'll possibly get started as early as their first-round pick (No. 11 overall).

In keeping with that theme, McClain's Chronicle colleague Lance Zierlein picked linebacker/defensive end Justin Houston for the Texans in his latest mock draft. Houston would fit in at one of the OLB slots for the Texans, with Connor Barwin and occasionally Mario Williams as other alternatives. Williams' role continues to be a subject of debate, and the reality could include roles both on the line and at LB.

ESPN NFL draft guru Mel Kiper, Jr. disagreed, sending DE J.J. Watt to the Texans in his latest mock, published Wednesday:

- Tim Kavanagh

--

Mel Kiper, Jr.
Wisconsin's Watt is the pick

"Phillips will love Watt, a big, aggressive, smart and scheme-versatile defensive end who can offer an immediate help for a defense in need of bodies for the front seven. At 290 pounds, with a really good burst and a relentless nature, you can do a lot with Watt along the defensive line. Houston has to find some pass-rush help to complement the great Mario Williams, and this is a good place to look."

--

UPDATE: On Monday, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle published his latest mock draft, and he has the Houston Texans taking Aldon Smith, the outsider linebacker prospect from Missouri.

Given the changes on D for the Texans this season, they remain one of the more intriguing teams both in the draft and free agency.

Latest on Peterson's stock

During the NFL draft combine, it was reported that the Panthers were considering the LSU cornerback as the No. 1 overall pick, and we noted that even if he doesn't go first overall, he won't be on the board much longer.

As Peterson's pro day approached, the buzz hadn't changed all that much, and Draftinsider.net passes along word that the Panthers held a meeting with Peterson recently, and that the Denver Broncos' decision-makers are "following him around." [Editor's note: If he weren't a high-profile draft prospect, this might be cause for a restraining order].

The argument for Peterson can be made on the part of both the Panthers and the Broncos, so their interest in him is not surprising. Moreover, if he's as good as everyone believes that he'll be, one would be hard-pressed to find a team that wouldn't want him. It will just come down to which team is ready to grab a CB instead of an option at another position of need.

UPDATE: ESPN NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas writes Monday afternoon that while it's noteworthy that Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera attended Patrick Peterson's pro day, and had dinner with him Sunday night, that puts him in a group of eight or so prospects being considered as the draft's top pick.

In other words, a lot can change over the next month and half -- and pro day attendance doesn't necessarily equal massive interest -- so take these latest reports with a grain of salt.

WR targets for the Bengals

Some of the earliest mock drafts we saw had the Cincinnati Bengals taking wide receiver A.J. Green with the fourth overall pick in the draft. As the Carson Palmer saga has unfolded, however, there has been a sea change in the prognostication regarding the Bengals' behavior on the night of April 28. Many now think that the team will invest their top pick in a quarterback.

Let's roll with that hypothetical, handing either Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert to the Bengals at No. 4. With that being the case, would the team address WR in Round 2? It's not a definite -- help is needed on all three levels of the defense -- but Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com provided some interesting options as he culled analysis from a variety of NFL draft gurus.

One option is Pittsburgh's Jonathan Baldwin -- profiled by ESPN's Jeff Dooley in August -- as well as Maryland's Torrey Smith and Boise State's Titus Young.

Tuesday, ESPN AFC North blogger James Walker touched on the Bengals' need for receiving help:

- Tim Kavanagh

--

James Walker
Out with Ochocinco?

"With Chad Ochocinco's future in Cincinnati in doubt, the team should look at a receiver in the first three rounds. There are more pressing needs, such as defensive line and quarterback. But minus Ochocinco, the Bengals also lack proven talent at receiver."

Devlin's details

In the 2008 draft, the Baltimore Ravens used their first-round pick on a quarterback from the Univ. of Delaware. Three years later, Joe Flacco appears to be on the right track, as another Delaware prospect at QB attempts to join him in the NFL ranks.

Delaware has scheduled its pro day on Tuesday, and according to Geoff Mosher of the News Journal, representatives from at least 10 NFL teams were in attendance: the Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

While the program fields an entire team, it's believed that the main object of observation is Pat Devlin, the prospect mentioned above. Devlin is the tenth-ranked passer according to ESPN's Scouts, Inc., and he could be a good option for a team that has a veteran in place, but needs a developmental QB for the future.

Another CB idea for Steelers

One idea for the Steelers in the draft is to trade up from No. 31 overall so as to get in position to pick Maurkice Pouncey's brother Mike. Pouncey is the 24th-highest rated prospect by ESPN's Scouts, Inc., so this would not be a small trade.

On Thursday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was at another school in the Sunshine State (the Pounceys are University of Florida products): the University of Miami, where the Hurricane prospects staged their pro day. Chris Freet of the UM athletic department tweeted that a number of NFL head coaches were on hand, including Tomlin, Jack Del Rio, Tony Sparano and Bill Belichick.

After seeing this report, ESPN AFC North blogger James Walker thinks that Tomlin may have been there for a specific player:

- Tim Kavanagh

--

James Walker
Harris could be a match

"Miami cornerback Brandon Harris could be a player of interest with the No. 31 overall pick. The Steelers have a big need at cornerback, and Harris is projected to go late in the first round or early in the second round."

--

UPDATE: Here's another idea for the possibly CB-needy Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 31 overall: Aaron Williams. Don Banks of Sports Illustrated has the Steelers taking the Texas product with that pick in his latest mock draft.

Bears' QB draft plans

No, the Chicago Bears aren't expected to draft a quarterback with their first pick -- or bring in a high-profile QB via free agency or trade. Jay Cutler is pretty well set in his position as the team's starter for 2011.

But behind Cutler, the situation gets fuzzy. Caleb Hanie, who was effective in relief in the NFC Championship game -- all while sporting a fine mustache -- is not a certainty to be retained as Cutler's primary backup. As a result, it's believed that the team will keep an eye on the bargain bin of the free agent pool when that part of the offseason commences, and using a mid- to late-round draft pick is also not out of the question.

It's not surprising, then, to read the report from Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune that the team is staging a workout for UNC QB T.J. Yates. Other QBs that the team has worked out or will work out include TCU's Andy Dalton, Wisconsin's Scott Tolzien and Nathan Enderle of Idaho.

Again, this is not a position that the team is expected to address early on, but Biggs believes that the most likely plan for 2011 is to have the depth chart read: 1. Cutler, 2. Hanie, 3. Rookie to be named later.

Another QB on Vikings' radar

The Vikings are one of the teams that fall into the QB-needy cohort this offseason; Joe Webb is returning, but it's uncertain whether his performance late last season against the Philadelphia Eagles is a sign of things to come or a fluke. As a result, we'll continue to hear the Vikes linked to every free agent and trade target QB on the market, in addition to the slew of QBs in the draft class.

One such prospect is Jake Locker. According to Aaron Wilson of National Football Post, the Vikings will meet with Locker on Tuesday.

Locker defied the conventional wisdom of leaving school a year early when his stock was high, and some argue that this was a mistake. On the other hand, the QB had another year to develop, and impressed with some of his measurables and personality during the pre-draft season thus far. Going back to the first hand, given that there may be a cap on rookie salaries enacted for this draft class, Locker may have lost millions in guaranteed money on his rookie deal; then again, the cap mostly affects the Top 15, and it's thought that Locker will be drafted below that position.

It's not certain that the Vikings will necessarily take Locker (or another QB) with their first-round pick at No. 12 overall, but they could be a team to watch for a possible trade back into the bottom of the first round as the opening night proceeds.

- Tim Kavanagh

--

Kevin Seifert
Big questions ahead

"In many ways, Locker will represent the first domino in the Vikings' decision-making process. (Call it a decision tree if you will.) Do they think he can be their quarterback of the future? If yes, is he a value pick at No. 12 or should they trade down to get him? If no, should they trade up for Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert, presuming they like both of them? If the answer is no to all of those questions, should the Vikings select another player at No. 12 and target a quarterback in the second round or later?."

More buzz on Jets' first pick

After speaking to a group of teens at a rehabilitation center in New Jersey on Tuesday, New York Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff offered up a quick take on how the team may use the No. 30 overall pick. Granted, we don't believe that Westhoff would disclose anything of true secrecy at such an event, so approach his comment with that in mind.

According to Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger, Westhoff thinks the team could take a pass-rusher or defensive lineman at No. 30. However, he adds that it'd be "a temptation" if the right wide receiver was on the board.

The WR suggestion is an interesting one, and may reflect the uncertain future of Braylon Edwards -- a topic on which we posted Monday afternoon. Really, we're just wondering whether the Jets have built up enough credit with their fanbase to avoid another angry mob at Radio City Music Hall on April 28 when they pass over whoever it is that the folks in the cheap seats want.

Browns' draft board buzz

As a developing team with a new head coach, the Browns could go a number of directions with their first-round pick (No. 6 overall). Really, the only position at which they're absolutely set is placekicker, having franchised Phil Dawson; as a result, it won't be surprising to see them take any number of different players on April 28.

This idea was confirmed by Holmgren on Monday, per Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. [Editor's note: Wasn't it more fun when Holmgren was referred to as the Browns' football czar last offseason? Sigh...].

"I think with our due diligence as an organization and a personnel department, it's our obligation to evaluate the best players coming out of college football," Holmgren argued, per Ulrich. "Cam Newton is one of those and so, yes, we are looking hard."

Holmgren was also quick to show some support for the Browns' receivers, who have been indirectly panned this offseason by the frequency with which A.J. Green is being taken by the Browns in media mock drafts. "Our receivers, believe it or not, run pretty well," Holmgren confirmed. "They do. Would you like real great, great speed out there? Sure, everyone would. But there aren't that many in the draft that run it that fast."

ESPN AFC North blogger James Walker isn't so sure that all this attention being paid to Newton is legitimate:

- Tim Kavanagh

--

James Walker
Head games are being played this time of year

"After singing the praises of Colt McCoy this entire offseason, this sudden interest in Newton appears very strange. I view it as a smokescreen."

--

Gary Horton
Three spots stick out to me

"They have needs all over the board. But, I have them really looking at a DE and an OT. They desperately need a better pass rush, as they have made their switch to the 4-3. But they also need to upgrade the right side of the OL and I think they need help at WR. They have some young guys, but we haven't really seen anyone step up and make big plays. My opinion right now is that their other needs are on the side of the defense and that's the area they need to concentrate on."

Teams after Tyron

With no free agency or trades to perk our interest, you may have noticed that a lot of attention is being paid to the draft this year. While teams' real thoughts on prospects are kept close to the vest, we can glean a little information here and there, such as reports on player visits.

Tyron Smith, an offensive tackle from USC who is recovering from knee surgery, is slated to visit with the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings, according to Aaron Wilson of National Football Post.

The Cowboys (at No. 9) certainly need the help; while Doug Free improved towards the end of his first full season as the starter at LT, RT Marc Colombo may be on his way out this offseason. The Vikings have 10-year vet Bryant McKinnie on the left and 2009 second-rounder Phil Loadholt on the right, so their immediate need is lower than other teams.

Per Wilson, Smith met with a number of teams at the NFL draft combine, including the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints. Meanwhile, in his latest mock draft, ESPN NFL Draft Insider Mel Kiper, Jr. sends him to the team picking one spot below the Vikes:

- Tim Kavanagh

--

Mel Kiper, Jr.
Lions should protect their big investment

"Detroit has to improve at the cornerback position, but unless they trade down the value isn't really available right here. The other big area of concern is the offensive line, where they need to do everything possible to keep Matthew Stafford upright in 2011, a year anyone can see is absolutely crucial to his development. Smith has added necessary bulk without losing much in the way of athleticism and offers a potential long-term solution at left tackle. An underrated run-blocker, he can also help pave the way for more from Jahvid Best."

Latest on Mike Pouncey

Interior offensive line prospect Pouncey has been linked to a number of teams thus far in pre-draft season; after folks saw how quickly his twin brother Maurkice got up to speed in the NFL with the Steelers in 2010, the thought may be that two apples from the same branch won't fall too far apart from one another (or some other non-fruit-based metaphor perhaps).

According to Mike Long, who covers the Jacksonville Jaguars and Florida Gators for the Associated Press, Pouncey believes that he'll be taken in the first round of this year's draft, somewhere between the 15th and 20th picks. Pouncey bases this projection on conversations he's had with teams like the Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

We'll wait to let Todd McShay of ESPN's Scouts, Inc. fill you in on where he sees Pouncey landing in his next mock draft [Editor's note: Coming to you on Wednesday! How's that for a tease?]. But counterpart Mel Kiper, Jr. published his latest mock this past Wednesday, and he had Pouncey pegged right in that 15-20 range:

- Tim Kavanagh

--

Mel Kiper, Jr.
He's headed to the Giants at No. 19

"Pouncey's brother was taken at No. 18 overall last year and became a Pro Bowl player in his first year with the Steelers. Mike offers a very similar skill set to Maurkice's. He can play guard or center, gets to the second level very well and should help the Giants in the running game. New York is a much better team when they have a running game that takes the heat off Eli Manning, and it should start up front."

--

James Walker
Pouncey won't last too long

"Ideally, Pouncey would drop to No. 31 for Pittsburgh. But I don't see it happening. If the Steelers want Pouncey to join his twin bother, Maurkice, they will likely have to trade up."
