The Phil Robertson thing was just a publicity ploy, pep. Worked like a charm.
Which part? I don't think Phil said what he said to gain publicity. I would probably agree that A&E's initial response was to try to gain publicity, then their reversal was a move to save face.

The whole thing was a big set up orchestrated by A&E and whatever magazine that was.

That show is seen by millions and millions of people, the vast majority of which share Robertson's views. They knew the backlash they would face by suspending him. It wasn't about saving face. It was about ending the big stunt they pulled.

No, I don't think A&E anticipated the magnitude of the backlash they received. I think they thought they would be more widely supported. I mean Cracker Barrel tried to jump on the pro-gay publicity train too.

I think a lot of the audience who watches that show is going to quit watching, because they're not going to let A&E off the hook. Same with Cracker Barrel.

I agree that the initial actions were to gain publicity, but I don't think they orchestrated this entire thing.

Yep, the whole thing. Say some controversial stuff that really isn't going to offend (and would probably endear you) to your viewing majority, blow it out of proportion by "suspending" him, run "Duck Dynasty" marathons like they are going out of style during the period (which they did) then triumphantly bring him back.

Look how much press it got.......all for free. You aren't going to lose your viewing base, you'll get new people to tune in just because of the controversy to see what the fuss is about and you'll get new people to tune in just to be outraged.

It was really a brilliant piece of marketing. I guess I'm only surprised that people don't see how obvious it all was.

Nah... I don't think Phil is that smart to manipulate the GQ article for more publicity. He could give a shit about that show.

Ok, this may make you angry but you asked and I'll answer.

I think they should be able to get married and enjoy the rights that everyone else does. I think the vast majority don't choose to be gay. I think they're born like it. Who is anyone else to tell them they can't get married? Based on a book that says snakes and bushes talk and that every animal in the world fit on a boat? OK...
No, I don't get angry. Marriage by definition is the union between a man and a woman. Why does the gay community think they are special and thousands of years of history needs to be changed to fit them? Next, people will want to marry their dog , or they may want to marry a child. I wouldn't support either of those attempts to marry any more than I would support two people of the same sex getting married. It is time people realize that there are some things they don't qualify for. I disagree with you about gays being born that way. Sucking cock is a learned behavior. I have many religious reasons that I won't go into other than to say that I think gay behavior is disgusting and goes against every natural law known to man. My feelings on the subject are very close to the Duck commanders views. Gay marriage is the first step on a slippery slope. Allowing it will open the doors for really sick shit.

These religious people speak out against it because they're told to. It doesn't affect them at all who gets married and who doesn't.

It does affect us. I don't want my grandchildren to have to look at that sick shit. No preacher or God had to tell me that it is disgusting. The sick feeling in the pit of my stomach tells me all I need to know.

Eh, I think those guys are all probably smarter than the show portrays them...much smarter. Phil built that company from nothing.

Having said that, at the very worst, the interview was part of his schtick, or he was just being honest. I don't think he really meant it as this huge PR move to boost ratings or whatever.

Probably shouldn't have changed that whole slavery thing also. It was around for a while. I don't want my grand children looking at that sick shit called integration

I think Willie is the brains behind the explosion of the family business. Phil is smart, maybe I chose my words poorly. I don't think he's publicly "savvy" enough to manipulate the GQ article to reach this result. Willie would probably be savvy enough.

I generally think they're all just pretty straight forward people. They're not afraid to speak their minds, especially Phil. I think he was just being himself and the rest of it was contrived. I definitely think the GQ author thought he would be able to make Phil look like a bumbling idiot, but Phil is at least well-reasoned.

If he were the homophobic bigot everyone supporting the GLAAD agenda assumed he was, those quotes would have been a thousand times worse.

I mean, comparing the enslavery of an entire race to a decided minority's inability to get a tax deduction and insurance benefits does nothing but marginalize slavery.

If the government would just stay out of marriage altogether, no one would care.

My position on gays and gay marriage is that encouraging homosexuality spreads homosexuality. Ancient Greece taught us that, as nearly every spartan man took a male lover and Athenians convinced themselves it was okay to fuck aristocratic children.

Gays should not be discriminated against, but I don't think the government should be actively encouraging the creation of homosexual units. In contrast I think that with the social role of the nuclear family government absolutely should go out of its way to promote hetero sexual marriage.

Society chooses which natural behaviors to support, it is not discrimination to only encourage those we would like to see spread in society.

And hell, I was born angry and violent, no one seems to encourage me to act on those impulses or excuses my behavior because of it.

They'll have to look at it anyway. The only differnce is they'll have rings on their fingers.

The slavery issue makes for a chicken shit argument. Being gay is a choice. Race is not a choice.

I don't think they chose to be gay any more than I "chose" to be addicted to videos of Japanese women defecating in public.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. The pro gay lobbies, such as GLAAD, are some of the biggest bullying associations on the planet, as seen with the Duck Dynasty dust up. They're all for Phil Robertson losing his job for speaking his beliefs, and I'm sure Kluwe is probably on board with that. Now he sees there are two sides to that coin.

When Phil Robertson backers were claiming his right to freedom of speech was being infringed upon, the anti-Phil faction was quick to point out it wasn't the government who was acting against him, so free speech didn't apply. They said Phil had the right to speak out, but there can be other ramifications, such as commercial and financial interests. Same thing here. Kluwe does have the right to speak out, but he better be ready to deal with the consequences.

Did Phil's employer do anything to him?
