Interesting thread.
I don't really see the effectiveness of gun control laws, but some of the pro-gun crowd arguments in this thread don't help your cause.
Random thoughts:
- Out of curiosity, what gun laws have been enacted lately (say 20 years) that restrict your ability to own guns or types of guns?
- People that are going to do horrible things will find a way to do horrible things. HBO has a new series called Vice where they talked about political violence in the Philippines. I didn't catch if guns were outlawed or just hard to come by, but there was a whole underground market of people that would build guns from scratch.
- I like most of iceberg's thoughts on training. That's just a responsible approach that anyone who is owning a gun (or using a gun) should follow.
- I would want a semi-automatic rifle for hunting. Or at least I can see an argument for it. As much as you want a clean shot and try your best to get a clean shot, it doesn't always happen that way. If you happen to wound, and not kill, an animal, you want to kill it as soon as possible. A semi-automatic gives you a better chance of doing that.
- I sort of get the "protect your home" thing. Maybe I'd be more behind this if I lived in a shitty area where I worried more about that, but home invasion is pretty low on my list of concerns (watch me get burgled tonight)
- I don't get the whole "I'm gunna fight the govt or foreign invaders" nonsense. Whatever. This is about a realistic as planning to fight back from an outer space alien invasion. I'd be more worried about some dipshit with a gun not knowing what he was doing and accidentally shooting me than having to defend myself from the government.
- Gun control is another one of those fringe issues that people are passionate about that politicians can bring out to fire up their base, smear their opponent or just generally distract the public from the real issues plaguing this country.
