DMN poll: Dallas fans endorse Jerry Jones as Cowboys owner

By JEFF MOSIER
Staff Writer

Dallas Cowboys fans are confident in owner Jerry Jones and his new head coach despite a losing season and dashed hopes to become the first team to play a home Super Bowl.

A huge majority expect to see the Cowboys return to the Super Bowl within five years, and they support having used tax dollars to build the new stadium in Arlington. But as for next Sunday’s big game there, Texans are split on who’s going to win — the Green Bay Packers or the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Those are the among highlights of a statewide poll by The Dallas Morning News on the matchup and a flurry of off-the-field issues as North Texas braces for widespread attention generated by Super Bowl XLV at Cowboys Stadium.

A large chunk of Texans — about 65 percent — say they plan to tune in, half watching intently but almost as many saying they mostly will be socializing.

As for the Cowboys, the results suggest that most fans don’t blame Jones for his team’s collapse, and they say rookie head coach Jason Garrett was a smart hire.

After advancing to the second round of the playoffs last year, the Cowboys started the regular season losing seven out of eight games and finished with a 6-10 record.

In the poll, 58 percent of Cowboys fans said Jones was doing an excellent or good job as owner. That’s higher than his nearly 50 percent approval rating from Texans overall.

“No matter the criticism he [Jones] might have taken in the press or anywhere else, more people seem to think he’s doing a good or even excellent job,” said pollster Mickey Blum.

Garrett, who replaced head coach Wade Phillips at midseason, fared even better. Nearly three-quarters of Cowboys fans said he was the right choice to lead the team.

Blum and Weprin Associates Inc. of New York conducted the telephone poll Monday through Thursday of Texas adults, 45 percent calling themselves Cowboys fans. The margin of error: plus or minus 3.5 percentage points overall and 5 percentage points on the fan results.

Geri Martin of Fort Worth gave Jones high marks, saying he often unfairly takes the blame when there is a letdown.

“If you don’t win every year, if you don’t make it to the playoffs every year, people need a scapegoat,” Martin said. “And he’s the biggest scapegoat.”

Mike Evans of Coppell agreed that Jones is a good owner but said he should step aside as general manager. He said that elevating Garrett to head coach was a wise move.

“He knows the team, and they know him. The team will buy into his system.”

Rich Dalrymple, Cowboys vice president of public relations, said he couldn’t speculate on how the poll compared to the organization’s expectations, but he said the team appreciates the feedback.

“The standards have always been very high for the Dallas Cowboys, and so is our commitment to meeting those,” he said.

Jerry the owner is terrific.

Jerry the GM... Not so much.

Endorsing him as the owner? Not surprising that he gets a high grade.

Voting on him being a good GM, wouldn't garner such a rosy review.

You can't be a good owner when you act as your own teflon awful GM.

Can't happen.

Not only isn't he a good owner, he's a terrible owner. The Cowboys would be much better off without that family.

Yeah, lets return to the good 'ole days of the Bum Bright era

Look dude, he has his flaws. Wanting to win and being too cheap are not two of them, and IMO those are two most important traits of a "good" owner.

You can continue on with the diarrhea of the mouth over the GM garbage, but just because you have a "real" GM doesnt mean you'll win big, or even win at all. Plenty of teams have "real" GM's and never do shit. They make bad free agent signings and draft bad players. They sign coaches with good intentions, then watch those coaches fail.

It doesnt guarantee success.

There are good and bad GMs. Just because you go out and hire a qualified guy doesn't mean you'll have success with that guy. It might take another hire. Might take two. But the philosophy for those hires is correct.

Having the same awful and fake GM stuck with your team with no possibility of parole is a surefire system for failure. It's an albatross on this team that they constantly have to overcome. And we're quickly approaching two decades of failure in that effort.

The owner puts this situation on his own team. So he can't possibly be a good owner.

When the day comes where he truly wants to win more than he wants to appease his own ego, then he'll take two steps toward that good owner tag.

You know that's a pretty valid point.

There are a lot of "real" football guys masquerading as GM's and club presidents who haven't done diddly squat.

I remember when the Bills hired Tom Donahoe as GM. At that point in time, Tom Donahoe was about as respected a "football guy" as you could want.

He went to Buffalo and was a complete disaster. His coaches sucked. His draft picks sucked. Just a dead period in the history of the Bills.

Then they brought in Marv Levy as GM. While Marv had not been a GM before, his track record as a coach was superb... And there was no questioning his "brains".

Anther gigantic turd for the Buffalo Bills.

Here's another example... Duane Charles Parcells.

Not one team he's been employed by since 1999 has won a playoff game. Not one.

I'm not saying that Parcells is a dunderhead. What I am saying is that having a supposedly smart "football guy" around doesn't always mean a lot.

Jerry Jones knows our GM is terrible yet he refuses to fire him. That makes him a bad owner.

Should be /thread right here.

And I don't buy the "well, other teams have GMs and they suck" argument. It's a ridiculous deflection that doesn't address the issue of whether or not THIS TEAM can move forward successfully with Jerry Jones acting as his own GM. We've got damn near two decades of history upon which to judge this and Jones hasn't even been close to MEDIOCRE in this capacity. He's been downright awful and why people refuse to acknowledge this is beyond me.

If Jerry would stop making training camp a traveling road show, not tell his coaches how to run practice/camps (like he appearantly did after Dez got injured, for example), and stop interrupting his coaches to gladhand with sponsors, celebrities, then I wouldn't have an issue with him.

I bet half of the people who view and did the poll on this are users in this forum.
