Like many, I had pretty low expectations for last nights game, especially from an offensive standpoint.

Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised at the first half.

1) I haven't read all the commentary here from last night yet but I was right there with CMD and some others in thinking Dak Prescott was not a good pick as a potential NFL QB. After last night I don't have any delusional thoughts that he's the next superstar player or anything, but what I saw last night was not at all what I expected. His composure, decision making, accuracy, velocity and especially his ball placement were outstanding. His footwork and throwing mechanics were also better than I expected. I think every single one of his 12 throws was thrown on the money. His two incompletions were bad drops by Swaim. His TD throws to Dez and TW were thrown exceptionally. He also had another nice downfield completion to Brice Butler. He threw the slant and the screens with perfection. He didn't try to take off and run as soon as he dropped back. He obviously has worked his ass off since the end of his college season. I really expected a fairly poor showing (especially considering it was the Rams defense and their first game back in LA) and instead what we saw was probably hands down the best preseason performance of a young backup QB that we've seen since Romo in 2006 (before he was named the starter). Not ready to make any proclamations about him being "the guy of the future" or anything, but there is cause for optimism.

2) Liked what I saw from both the RB's Morris and Jackson. I'd keep them as backups to Zeke and kick everything else out. Maybe keep Rod Smith as the 4th guy, though I'd lean towards either finding a true FB or maybe trying to find a 4th TE that's an excellent run/pass blocker.

3) Starting WR group was exceptional. If they stay healthy, they are going to cause serious problems for everyone. Cole Beasley looks even quicker than before, and Dez surprised everyone by talking himself onto the field and then playing well. TW's move/route on that TD from Prescott was textbook. (Much to the disappointment of Omega)

4) Starting OL was strong, even without Tyron Smith. After the middle 3 guys were removed though it was rough (see below)

5) Lucky Whitehead could be pretty significant as a return guy this yr. He had an explosive punt return for TD in the blue/white scrimmage the other night, then had a length of the field KO return to open game last night. Looks MUCH more decisive with his returns. Still showed he's a major weapon on the WR sweep play too.

6) Liked what I saw from Cedric Thornton, Mark Nzeocha and Anthony Hitchens with the 1st half defense. A couple of the backup DB's looked decent to me- Ronald McKinnon (very active) and CB Deji Olatoye. Had a couple nice plays vs the pass and came up with a pick too. The newly signed DL Shaneil Jenkins had a sack and another hit on the QB and looks like he might be a solid PS candidate.

On the downside,

1) The backup OL (especially the tackles) was atrocious. Chaz Green wasn't hopeless when he was in with the starters, but as soon as Collins/Fred/Martin came out he was really bad. He really looked like he ran out of gas completely to me (poor conditioning, see below). Whoever played RT was equally as awful, both guys got whipped repeatedly in the 2nd half and made it hard for Showers and Darius Jackson to have any real success. If Green doesn't improve pretty quick there will definitely have to be a move at swing tackle made.

2) Awful drops by Swaim and Jones, two guys who had really been talked up so far in camp. I don't remember anyone else dropping anything, but these two guys dropped two each. Both of Jones drops cost us 1st downs. One of Swaim's looked like a play that could have went for a really good gain.

3) The kick and put return coverage was pretty awful (again, seems like it is that way every preseason)

4) 10 accepted penalties was pretty bad. One or two of the calls were bogus, but many were just inexcusable. I think we stopped 3 or 4 drives but due to penalties, gave the Rams new sets of downs. I know at least one of those (and maybe two) ended in TDs for them.

5) Probably the single biggest disappointment though had to be the play of DE's David Irving and Ryan Russell. Like Swaim and Jones above, these two guys had really been talked up by the coaches and people covering the team. They didn't play very well in the first half, and then made it worse by doing nothing against the Rams scrub OL's in the 2nd half. Supposedly Marinelli was disgusted with the defense in the 2nd half and I bet most of his angst had to do with these two guys playing so poorly. They kept trotting them out there even late in the game hoping they'd do SOMETHING positive, and they never did. No signs of a pass rush from either one of them and both struggled mightily against the run. Russell badly whiffed on a couple of tackles.

6) In addition to the penalties, there were quite a few missed routine tackles, the above mentioned dropped passes and I thought late in the game a clear display of the team being gassed (offensive and defensive guys). All of these things are a direct reflection on poor coaching/leadership IMO.

7) JJ Wilcox had an awful night and made only one positive play that I saw (big hit to break up potential long completion). His man coverage and open field tackling were dreadful though. Unless some guys get hurt, I don't see how he makes the team this year. Also didn't see much positive from 6th rd pick Kavon Frazier. Saw him once take a really bad angle on a play that ended up in big yards. Kyle Wilbur also stunk on defense IMO.

I was encouraged by the first half of the game though. The offense looked REALLY good and despite our challenges defensively, we made the top pick of the draft (Goff) look pretty bad. A lot of key guys were held out (Romo, Witten, T Smith, Zeke, Lawrence, Tapper, Lee, Scandrick, T Crawford) but I would imagine we'll see most of these guys for at least a quarter or so vs Miami this week. Disappointingly, our top-4 draft picks ALL missed the game last night.

Still showed he's a major weapon on the WR sweep play too.

that seems to be his only offensive talent: the sweep or the sweep decoy. can he not run a downfield pattern? too skinny to risk being clobbered by a safety?

Maybe he hadn't fully picked up the offense last yr. Maybe he'll have more of a role going forward.

Hell they didn't even totally trust him just to do returns last yr, so I doubt they'd trust him fully to run the right routes etc etc. I also suspect downfield blocking on run plays wasn't exactly one of his strong suits either.

short yardage offense continues to be a concern. they can't impose their will in obvious running situations.

Because other teams are well schooled in knowing we won't EVER fake that handoff and like, throw it to the TE or anything.

Its really a simple fix too. Just quit running plays from tight formations. At least have ONE WR in the game split out (preferably Dez, who teams almost assuredly would have to double cover or at least shade safety help to) and that takes a couple guys out of the box. Hell run 3rd and 1 or 3rd and 2 from 3 WR's and 1 back and really make the other team cover the field. Our OL can block just about anybody's front 6/7, especially for a short play.

They continue to insist on the GL/3TE set with everyone tight though, making it easy for the other team to line up 11 guys in the box.

They faked it the other night and the play had zero chance.

Showers ran a PA pass in a short yardage play and rolled to the short side of the field, nobody was fooled and the play was covered. Incomplete pass.
Yeah umm, I'm not counting preseason gadget let's bootleg the QB plays. Short yardage has been a problem for a LONG time and we never, ever actually fake the handoff and PASS the ball for the short yardage, we always either run the ball with the obvious "jumbo" package you talked about before, or we throw long to Dez. (That one infamous time.)

THE problem with our short yardage situation - it sounds like we agree - is our fucking PREDICTABILITY. We telegraph it and are NO threat to do play-action in that situation.

They have run some PA passes out of tight sets. Tyler Clutts caught a TD vs GB in a GL play on it. There's been a few other times its been used.

I just don't think the odds are with them converting most times in that formation, especially when Romo is basically zero threat to keep the ball and run with it. It might work more with someone like Prescott, especially if they'd fake it and roll to the wide side of the field.

As good as our OL is, they arnt all gigantic brutes who maul the other front. If the other teams has 9, 10 or 11 in the box the result is pretty predictable.

My "after thoughts"

*Dak Prescott better than I thought.
*Offensive Line (not counting waste of space Chaz Green) as good as I thought.
*Defense worse than I thought.

That is all.

.

Well they did sit Lawrence, T Crawford, T McClain, Lee, Scandrick, Mayowa was still out and both rookie DL's we drafted were out. That's quite few pieces not on the field.

But like I said above, they have to be concerned about how bad Russell and Irving were.

The problem with the shit job of this Front Office the past several off-seasons is that this team has no (quality) depth. Guys are going to get hurt and your back-up's are going to see the field. This is why you can't keep wasting picks and turning no-name scrubs like Mackenzy Bernadeau, Andrew Gachkar, and Benson Mayowa into millionaires because you want to appear clever. What I saw out there was team captain Barry Church missing tackles...JJ Wilcox is in year 4 and still takes false steps and horrible angles... guys like Kyle Wilber who have not shown a damn thing, still getting opportunities.

Broaddus was saying that the Dallas offense changed to help out Dak.

They put him in the shotgun often. In camp Dak had problems seeing reads facing his back to the defense when taking snaps from center. (for you smartasses, the problem was when he turned back around the defense had already gotten out of their pre-snap look)

They also kept a TE back to give him more time in the pocket.

That's probably the most important thing to take from Saturday night concerning him. If he's asked to run the same offense Romo is, he's going to fail. Keep it simple for him and play to his strengths so as not to ruin him; then in the future give him more and more to digest.

well jeez, Collins, Frederick and Martin are big boys for their respective positions, and most short yardage attempts go right up the middle instead of off tackle, so someone's failing up front. the disappearance of a battering ram FB from our offense might be another factor.

if accurate, its mind boggling to me how they could game plan for Dak in order to help him succeed but utterly fail to do so for any of last years back ups.

I was listening to Sturm this morning and he alluded to the idea that Garrett hamstrung/castrated the back up QBs last year and its something I've also thought myself. I wish he would have expounded on that because I got the feeling someone (Garrett?) was in the ear of the QBs screaming at them not to screw up and as a result thats all they thought about thus they screwed up

Cant argue with any of that. These guys are not good players for sure.

Hopefully Nzeocha continues to show well and replaces Wilbur. I was pretty impressed with him. Big and fast with good range.

Unless some other guys get hurt or a miracle happens and Wilcox really steps up his play, I think he is a goner.

Probably stuck with Church as a starter for another yr though unfortunately.

Its still a numbers game BB. If the other team can just load up the box with all their guys its not that hard to get the push going the wrong way. Witten is still a decent blocker but none of the other TE's are IMO, and we haven't had a decent blocking FB in a long time.

When I see comments like this from Broaddus it makes things easier to understand about why he is unemployed as a scout.

First off, Romo throws a lot from the shotgun. That's been a staple of the offense for years and many people (including some in this forum) believe the formation is over utilized, but the fact is more and more teams run shotgun formations now even on 1st and 2nd downs in this league.

Second, Prescott did attempt several passes after taking a snap from under center. Some of the down/distance situations dictated that it was a throwing down (3rd downs, some 2nd and longs) as well.

Lastly, his comment about keeping a TE in to block is nothing new. This is also something they've done for years, even with Witten staying in to help out in obvious passing situations (especially some of those years where the OL really struggled). Tyron Smith didn't play the other night either, so it behooves them to give help to the inexperienced guy (Green) playing his first football in almost two years.

Other than running a couple of very well designed and executed screens I didn't notice any difference at all in the offense. Broaddus is a dipshit.
