SI's Peter King: Bill Cowher 'would be a possibility' to coach Cowboys

SportsDayDFW sports

Sports Illustrated senior NFL writer Peter King talked about the Cowboys on Colin Cowherd's ESPN radio show on Monday. Here is a brief recap.

On the possibility of Bill Cowher coaching the Cowboys:

"I think it would be a possibility. A lot of people have said, 'Well, he's going to want to run his own show.' Just remember, in Pittsburgh , that's a team, going back to Art Rooney Jr. with Chuck Noll , Dan Rooney and The Chief always said that the personnel guy is going to be very well respected and a part of the triumvirate that runs this team. You know, ownership, personnel and coaching. And so Chuck Noll, a lot of times, would go head-to-head with Art Rooney. So, when Bill Cowher gets the job it's first Tom Donahoe and then later it's Kevin Colbert. And Kevin Colbert is one of the most underrated front office people of any kind in the NFL. And Bill Cowher never had a problem understanding his place in the team. Now, the question is: Tom Ciskowski is the personnel guy there and he and Jerry Jones do an awful lot. But I would also make this point, that Bill Parcells left the Dallas Cowboys really liking and respecting Jerry Jones because he knew that if there was something that he really wanted Jerry would listen to him. So, Jerry is not at all an unreasonable GM/executive to work with. And he is not one of these imperialist guys that says, 'Hey, you step back. I'm going to make the decision here.'

On why he wrote that it's time for the Cowboys to make a head coaching change:

"Because I've watched the last two games that the Cowboys have played. It's an abomination. You know, Wade Phillips is the defensive coordinator of this team. That was the last chance for the Cowboys to salvage their season and David Garrard played like some kind of combination of Joe Montana and Johnny Unitas . It's shameful the way they're playing. Two consecutive weeks, allowing Eli Manning and David Garrard four touchdowns apiece? Seventy six points in two weeks? They're just not playing hard. They're not playing well. They're not focused. Miles Austin is dropping interceptions into the defenders hands. It's not time to say, 'Well, let's salvage the season and let's make a playoff run.' Sometimes you got to make a change just for change's sake and I think the Cowboys have reached that point. Other than beating your head against the wall, it makes no sense in my opinion to keep Wade Phillips."

Nothing like getting information from an expert.

Edit: Spoke too fast. It was a good column.

I agree with King on Cowher. Not because I'm looking for a reason to believe he'll be the new coach here but I don't think we can assume he wants to wear all the hats in the building. Coming from Pittsburgh, he may very well prefer a defined pecking order and only wants to have the GM's ear and, of course, an ass load of money.

I'll dance a f'n jig if Cowher comes here. That would mean less Jerry and we're talking about a guy who won consistently year after year. Including a title.

Everybody tongue bathes Tom Landry. He won two titles in the 74 years he coached here. He lost more Super Bowls than he won.

But that guy is the GOAT and Cowher isn't worth bringing in now. lol
