Optimism --

As bad as some moments were last year and despite a decimating run of injuries (especially on defense), the Cowboys were very close to making the playoffs. If Dez Bryant's hand doesn't land partially out of the endzone, maybe just that would have been enough for the Cowboys make the playoffs.

So if you accept the premise that the Cowboys were very close to making the playoffs, then a small positive change here or there could be enough for a winning record and a playoff berth.

Garrett's bright red head clearly wasn't big enough to wear two hats (head coach and OC). I really do believe that the team will be better off with Callahan as game day OC.

Although it isn't saying much, I think the OL will be better than last year. If nothing else, the young backups have now had a year in the weight room so they shouldn't be as hopeless this year. Beyond the OL, I am confident that the rest of the offense is good enough to be competent and competitive.

If the LBs stay healthy, I'm confident they'll be a strength. The CB shouldn't be a liability and may be a strength.

I think a reasonable case can be made that the team will be modestly better this year. And if they are modestly better, that should be enough for them to get into the playoffs.

Pessimism --

The soul crushing reality of recent seasons. Some losses were so excruciating that it was almost comical. It has been demoralizing. I'm not at all confident that this team knows how to win or that it can tolerate success.

Optimism:
Anything new to the offense.
CB depth.
LB depth.
WR height.
TE clean rap sheets.
DL cultural diversity.

Pessimism

Jason Garrett's system which dictates play calling based on defensive alignment. Unless there are running plays called to intentionally carve apart the defense, the offense really has every reason to remain similar.

WR speed really boils down to Armstrong. And when he is cut in favor of Beasley, there will be good speed at WR but no one truly fast. I used to think Austin ws fast but it seems his workout speed is much faster than his game speed.

Lousy depth on DL.

Anyone else afraid romo has a shit year overall. I could see him losing his arm a bit this year.

Won't really need his arm this year. I'll show you how.

Kick return by Dunbar to the Dallas 40.
1st and 10 from the 40: Romo outside pitch to Murray for 15 yards.
1st and 10 on the Giants 45: Romo drawplay to Murray for 10 yards.
1st and 10 on the Giants 35: Romo bootleg for 7 yards.
2nd and 3 on Giants 28: Romo inside handoff to a bluestreak named McSurdy for 3 yards.
1st and 10 on Giants 25: Romo pump fake to Dez slant, reverse to Randle for 18 yards.
1st and goal on the Giants 7: Romo quick snap, play action and then alley oop to Escobar for touchdown.

My plan calls for less high frequency passing and less overall need for Romo to throw long to open running lanes underneath.
