Danny Amendola, the best wide receiver for the St. Louis Rams, is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

The position is in need of serious help even if Amendola does return and that was made even more clear when the Rams bounced troubled wideout Titus Young on Friday, 10 days after claiming him on waivers from the Detroit Lions.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher said the club was extensive in evaluating Young after claiming him, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“We spent probably four or five days with him and as an organization – at the end of the interview process, let’s call it – we decided it was best for us to go a different direction,” Fisher said. “We just felt that he was not the best option for us at that position. He’s an outstanding young talent and we’re gonna wish him well.”

The Lions, of course, dumped the 2011 second-round pick after a series of behavioral issues. As desperate as the Rams are for help at wide receiver, they didn’t want to risk encountering issues with Young will trying to see how talented he can be.

“We went into detail,” Fisher said of the interview process. “We felt like we’ve got a good, young group (at wide receiver), and we feel like perhaps Titus is better suited for another organization.”

Brandon Gibson is also scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent and behind him and Amendola the Rams have Austin Pettis, Chris Givens and Brian Quick under contract. If St. Louis wants to tap into quarterback Sam Bradford’s ability and truly develop him, it is going to have to provide him with more capable talent at the position.

Would be great if the Rams went WR at 16, allowing (hopefully) Warmack to fall to us.

But here's a question... would you trade them Miles Austin for a 2nd rounder?

1st - Chance Warmack/Jonathan Cooper
2nd - Kawaan Short
2nd - Justin Hunter/Tavon Austin

The only problem with trading Austin is that this team isn't exactly loaded at WR either.

Austin and his brittle hamstrings have not lived up completely to the money Jerry threw in his lap. Dwayne Harris made some nice strides at the end of last year but this team better have a contingency plan in place such as above by drafting a WR early and or looking for production in FA. Personally think there are more pressing needs than getting rid of one starting WR only to look for a replacement. IMO I would keep Austin and ask him to restructure his contract.

would seriously consider it, but in the end if they move Austin it just opens up another hole that has to be filled

Damn. That's pretty bad when a team that'll spend a pretty high draft pick on Janoris Jenkins thinks you're such a bad apple they cut you after a few days.

You should be able to run an extremely effective offense with a #1 WR, a franchise QB and a nice TE. Hell the Texans have been doing it for years, and Daniels/Schaub are no Romo/Witten.

No Garrett needs three All Pros plus Witten to really execute his offense the way he wants

How did we have Austin and Dez go off, plus Robinson notching double digit TDs and still miss the playoffs in 2011? God I hate us.

I really think all they need is 5 above average OL, and they'd execute the offense they way he wants

Hell yeah! I like Austin, but I'm tired of him coming up gimp with his hamstring.

I'd just cut Miles.

Why cut him if you could gert a 2nd rounder for him? That was the question. But with his cap number... yeah, I'm leaning towards outright cutting him as well. I'm more in favor of giving Hannah a bigger role in the offense.

You should... if you had a competant HC/OC/playcaller.

Would you trade a 2nd for Miles? I thought you were tired of him coming up lame?

I guess mine was hypothetical too. We don't let anyone under 40 walk unless we can't squeeze room under the cap for him.
