I don't think it's perfect but I do think it would make a difference.

Making the field bigger is the better option. The hits will still be huge but there will be less. But they'd almost have to allow illegal contact again or even the worst teams in the NFL would be breaking scoring records. Plus, you widen the field suddenly all the records are meaningless, so probably never going to happen.
