On ESPN Dallas tonight, Nate Newton said that the Giants will take the NFC East followed by the Redskins then Eagles and then the Cowboys. He said that defense has been winning championships - Cam Newton did well but it was his defense that got him through the season and Peyton Manning was not functioning as a quality QB. So he said they it's going to be some time before Dallas gets back on top. Their defense is not good enough.

But since you started it, let me piggyback and list a few things he said last week about camp (I was on vacation and on phone only):

- Is worried about our defense like everyone else. Doesn't know where the playmakers are.

- Doesn't buy the idea that the running game can "improve" the defense. You still need a defense.

- Asked who our best OL was, said Zack Martin easily. Said he's incredible. (I thought he'd say Tyron.)

- Said watch out for this Zach Wood, DL from SMU. One day he whipped Collins like four times in a row and when Collins finally blocked him, he tried to pancake him out of revenge/relief.

- Said overall our camp is very blah, there's not a lot of excitement. So many positions are already decided and the starters are getting a ton of time off.

- Doesn't seem to buy that especially young players like Elliott can roll out there against the Giants with no work and play well. This is the elite of the elite, both players and coaches, and no matter how much talent you have it's too big a jump to do it without practice.

This part I agree with and have been saying this for a few seasons now. It isn't just with Elliott, they run the whole team this way.

TE (and dbair), Nate did ramble on a little about Elliot and how he will kind of help the team but his rambling was just kind of an indiscernible mass of sentences without point or a logical dismount (which then may indicate the car load smoking). It was kind of like "Will Elliot carry the team? Yes and no. But mostly no. But yes I would like some more Doritos".

Yes he was really serious. Everyone else on the show picked Dallas to win the division. And Nate said the defense mostly is the reason they will be last.

He got a day off the other day because they were practicing short-yardage situations. How pussy is that? I bet Zeke is ready to go, but Garrett is such a scared.little bitch he won't let him play.

When they were talking to Nate they mentioned how many of the players family members are at camp. Tapper has damn near his whole family there. They asked Nate if it was like that when he was still playing in Dallas, his response was... "Nah man, we were practicing. Family wasn't allowed."

That's because TC is just a show for the fans, and a way to make more money off merchandise sales.
I know the new CBA limits practice time, but teams like the Steelers and Titans are actually hitting hard and going full steam.

I just posted the blurb in the TC thread, but the ESPN writer for the Pats said today that last nights preseason game was the first live hitting the Pats have done so far. 12 practice days in.

Also in the 80's Bill Walsh was said to have never let his teams do any live tackling during TC.

Well, I guess you can say those teams also benefited from good coaching. We don't have that luxury.

I think its just an example of there is not set way to have to do things to succeed.

The only Cowboys training camp I've been to was 1992 (yr of first super bowl) in Austin. I was amazed at how much some portions of practice there looked just like a real football game. They were in full pads and major tackling every day I was there in 110-115 degree heat sometimes. This would seem to me the best way to prepare for real games, but there are examples where successful teams haven't had to do that.

No. It wasn't 110-115° in Austin. The heat index maybe, but not the actual temp. Regardless, its fucking hot. That's the reason I don't attend Rangers games in the summer, or tailgate at the home openers. Its fucking miserable. There is nothing enjoyable about standing around sweating and stewing up some swamp ass.

The zone is like a Vegas casino but instead of oxygen, sunshine gets pumped in 24/7. Pump going to crap out sometime in October IMO.
