It took the New England Patriots roughly six minutes to release Aaron Hernandez after the tight end’s arrest stemming from a homicide investigation.

Josh Brent is still on the Cowboys’ roster more than six months after the nose tackle’s arrest for intoxication manslaughter.

It’s natural for folks to compare the way the Patriots and Cowboys dealt with the arrested players, but this is far from an apples vs. apples case.

The dead man’s mother in New England isn’t publicly pleading with Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick to do everything in their power to help Hernandez. Stacey Jackson, the mother of deceased Cowboys practice squad linebacker Jerry Brown, made it as clear as possible how important it was to her that the Cowboys not abandon her son’s best friend after Brent’s deadly, grievous judgment error.

There is also the matter of the charges and intent of the alleged crimes.

The police in Massachusetts have yet to make the charge against Hernandez public – and the Patriots could have more information than the media – but we know that he was arrested after a homicide investigation. At the very least, he is accused of destroying evidence to cover up the crime. At the worst, he was directly involved in a premeditated murder.

There is no excuse for Brent driving with a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit, especially since he had a previous drunk-driving conviction in college, but it was not his intent to kill Brown that night in December. The guilt was devastating.

The point isn’t to argue that the Patriots or Cowboys are right or wrong. (My opinion is that the Cowboys should have cut ties with Brent by now, considering that prosecutors allege that he has tested positive for alcohol and marijuana while out on bail.)

It just isn’t fair to compare the way the Cowboys have handled Brent to the way the Patriots dismissed Hernandez. The cases are too different to judge the same way, whether you’re a judge, jury member or general manager.

I think everyone understands they're not the exact same facts. But they're at the very least comparable in the general sense that each person has been arrested in connection with the death of another. I don't see how comparing the two is unfair at all.

That's my opinion too, but don't expect Jerry to do anything rational.

Brent: we know he was drunk driving, we know he was speeding, we know he tested positive for weed recently, and we know that he negligently killed someone. Conversely, we don't know anything definitive about Hernandez.

It isn't fair to compare the Patriots and Cowboys.

They are a winning organization. Today just gives one example why.

We trotted our murderer on the sideline the next Sunday.

The Hernandez case sounds more like the Ray Lewis case but we don't know the charges yet..

I don't think Lewis killed anyone, but he saw someone get killed and tried to cover it up.

Hernandez killed someone it appears.

I doubt Hernandez was a triggerman himself.

Whats the point of being really really rich if you don't have minions to do your dirty work, just like the Ray Lewis situation.

He had already shot one person in the face. He was seen on his home surveilance system walking through his house with a gun. Then the large gap in surveilance followed.

It's not.

Duh. One guy drove drunk, one guy murdered another.

It is all about how your organization deals with non-football related matters.

Do you put the football team over the idiocy off the the field or do you allow it to hang around like a dark cloud.

The Patriots said frick it almost immediately, knowing full well it might cost them big time cap dollars if they can't recover.

Jerry Jones has been hemming and hawing, allows the guy on the sidelines (although he "didn't know" ~salesman wink~) the Sunday after and allows the legal system, and the NFL punishment thereafter to drive his decisions.

To me, it is cut and dry. If the guy isn't going to be around to play football for you, frick him. Move on. And that's exactly what Kraft did with this. You get rid of the problem and the circus along with it.

You move on with football. And that is more important than anything.

I think it's pretty chickenshit to hold Hernandez up as a reason why Brent should be given some sort of pass.

Sure, don't compare the two. Take each situation and arrive at a conclusion based on it's facts.

Brett killed someone while driving drunk. I think he should have been cut when it happened but understand the pussy "supportive" aspect where people who fuck up get support to help them cope with their repeated fuck ups.

He tested positive, he should have been cut that afternoon. You can only help someone for so long and then you start to become an enabler. Dallas is enabling him at this point.
