Several teams have locked up franchise quarterbacks ahead of training camp this year. Add the Atlanta Falcons to that list.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that Matt Ryan and the Falcons agreed on a five-year contract extension worth $103.75 million. NFL.com's Albert Breer later reported that the deal was signed. The deal includes $59 million guaranteed and $63 million in the first three years. ESPN's Chris Mortensen was first to report the news.

Ryan was set to enter the final season of the rookie contract he signed with the Falcons after being selected third overall in the 2008 NFL Draft. If he plays out the life of his new deal, Ryan is in line to be a free agent when he is 32 years old.

Ryan is coming off the best season of his career. He threw for more than 4,700 yards with 32 touchdowns and 14 interceptions and a passer rating of 99.1. Ryan led the Falcons to the best record in the NFC before securing the first playoff win of his career. The Falcons were eliminated in a narrow NFC Championship Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

The Baltimore Ravens cost themselves millions by allowing Joe Flacco to play out the final year of his contract in 2012. The Falcons didn't take any chances with Ryan, a franchise star who should help keep them competitive for years to come.

24 years ago Troy Aikman signed an 11 million dollar deal.

Does that mean in 24 years some QB will be signing for a billion dollars?

I don't think any other salaries have risen as sharply as those of the professional athlete. They are out of control.

And we're all paying for it.

It costs like $50 to part at Jerry World. Tickets are what, $180 a piece for the nosebleeds?

I hope so. My son is going to be an NFL quarterback. You thought Todd Marinovich's dad was hard on him? You just wait. I'll have this kid lifting weights and throwing me passes at 6 months old.

I wonder if there is ever a point when the star QB, already wealthy beyond his wildest dreams, says that he'd rather have some of the contract money spent on securing a few more key players for the team.

How much is a legacy (championships) worth to the man who already has many millions?

You must have been out of the loop. The owners are screwing the players. Come on man, get with the times.
