Cowboys rookie DT Maliek Collins suffers broken foot during OTAs

Rookie defensive tackle Maliek Collins, a third-round pick of the Cowboys out of Nebraska, has been sidelined by a broken right foot, the team announced on its website Wednesday morning.

The injury was suffered during the team's opening round of OTAs last week and will keep him out of the remaining six offseason practices, plus June's three-day minicamp. According to David Helman of DallasCowboys.com, Collins already has undergone surgery. Collins' timetable for recovery, according to Helman, is expected to be 10-12 weeks.

Collins is the lone member of the Cowboys' 2016 draft class to not have signed a rookie deal after Charles Tapper and Dak Prescott put pen to paper Tuesday.

Owner Jerry Jones has previously described Collins as "a cornerstone player" for the Cowboys. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli has told Collins, "You fit us to a T."

Coming out of the draft, Marinelli sees Collins as an immediate upgrade in his eight-man rotational defensive front. If healthy, Collins may be in line to see more snaps at the key three-technique defensive tackle spot over the first four games of the season.

That's because the Cowboys could move starting defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford to defensive end the first four games with ends DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory out (suspensions).

This setback, however, means it could be near the end of training camp before Collins returns to the field.
We'll have more information as it becomes available.

That sucks, but at least it isn't hip surgery.

And at least his first name isn't Chaz. Who names their kid Chaz, anyway?

But I digress.

He'll be back in time for the season. Not a big deal.

Its probably a big deal. Its a foot, which is kinda a tough injury for anyone to heal good, especially a big guy. he wont be able to run or do cardio work, so he'll probably struggle to get into good shape quickly after he does return.

Not to mention all the practice time and reps he'll miss. Probably end up a wash out rookie year now.

He's a perfect fit for Marinelli's scheme. As a rotational pass rusher he was definitely important. And if he were actually "good" early, he definitely gave us some flexibility to maybe move Crawford to DE while we wait for Gregory and Lawrence to return.

He's a loss for sure.

First, he'll be back for the season.

Second, he's a rookie. We don't even know if he can play yet.

Third, even if he does show he's useful, he probably wouldn't really be productive until halfway through the season anyway.

Overall, this is hardly a big deal. Much better now than in camp like happened to Lawrence.

The funny thing is he's the only rookie drafted that hasn't signed his contract yet. Not sure what he's been holding out for but he just lost any leverage he might have had.

Rookies don't have any "leverage" any longer. All their deals are slotted.

Valid points, but I didn't have a lot of high hopes for him this season anyways. He wasn't dominant in college, no reason to think he'd come in and be a dominant focal player in the NFL this year.

Besides, we got Golden Cock. We're good.

They're writing the post season "Here's why we sucked" statement right now.
It's a writable PDF now.Just fill in the blanks, read it a monotone and get ready for next year.
