Some surprises keep coming: Cowboys informed former Pro Bowl right guard Leonard Davis they will be releasing him this week.

Wow. I thought I read where he was going to stay.

I know he wasn't a world beater, but this is a hit to our offensive line.

Davis released.

Per Adam Schefter.

Hmmm... now that it's done, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'd rather cut Williams before Davis.

I figured Kosier or Columbo would have been on the chopping block first. Do they cut him and try to bring him back at a reduced rate?

Not a big (no pun) surprise to me...they probably figure at his level of play from the past 2 seasons they can sign a free agent for much less than he was going to make...he also doesnt fit the scheme any longer, he just isnt mobile enough

Its also not beyond the realm of possibility that he is re-signed to a more cap friendly contract

Brand new right side next year. I wonder if we're planning on starting Smith at LT from day 1 or transitioning him.

Losing Free would be a major blow, especially if the plan ended up being a rookie at LT and a train wreck like Colombo back at RT.

Interesting. I wonder what the holdup with free is, not that he could sign right now anyway but there must be a big offer for him out there somewhere...

And it is interesting with the line, I think I was prepared mentally that the day would come where they just shake it up and rebuild......makes me nervous though to watch them do it at a time like this.

I have to imagine Free stays and a new right guard is signed and kosier is resigned also. Leonard Davis has struggled alot at times and he is expensive.

Depending on who we replace Colombo with Gurode could look like a sore thumb, being the last of the unathletic maulers we have along the line.

Savings for Leonard Davis is $6 million
July, 26, 2011 Jul 2611:56AM CTEmail Print Comments By Calvin WatkinsAccording to ESPN's John Clayton the Cowboys' saved $6 million by cutting Leonard Davis.

The way the new CBA has come together, the terminated contract used in the June 1 policy means the Cowboys can take $6 million in savings off the salary cap thanks to the release of Davis.

Davis from Wortham, Texas, who played college ball at the University of Texas, started 16 games for the Cowboys for four consecutive seasons. Davis struggled at times in 2010, he was benched in the second quarter of a Oct. 10 game vs. Tennessee for Montrae Holland.

However, when Holland suffered an injured eye, Davis returned and started playing better. Davis didn't miss a snap the rest of the season yet when things were over it appeared it might be time for the Cowboys to move on.

Shefter just reported Colombo is gone too, but that conflicts with other reports saying the Cowboys were going to keep him (for now)

With Davis going don't be surprised if Roy Williams gets released too.

----------------

Why would Davis and Roy be related?
