By Tim MacMahon

It’d make a lot of sense for the Cowboys to seriously consider trying to lock up Laurent Robinson to a long-term extension.

After all, he’s emerged as their most reliable wide receiver this season despite not arriving at Valley Ranch until September. His rapport with Tony Romo has resulted in seven touchdowns over the last five games, a key factor in the Cowboys move to first place in the NFC East.

There’s no good reason the Cowboys wouldn’t want to keep Robinson, who is enjoying a breakout campaign in his fifth NFL season after playing for the Atlanta Falcons and St. Louis Rams and spending the preseason with the San Diego Chargers.

While a contract extension isn’t his priority at this point, Robinson indicated that he’d certainly be open to the idea during an appearance on the Black Friday bonus edition of ESPN 103.3’s The Football Show.

“I would love to be wearing the star the rest of my career,” Robinson said. “I love everything about Dallas, my teammates. The stadium is out of control. That’s why you see me smiling every time I catch the ball. I just feel like this changed my whole career around. I’m just loving it here. I would love to stay a Cowboy, but we’ll see. I’m just going to try to keep getting better every week and see what happens later.”

The Cowboys once gave Patrick Crayton, a quality No. 3 receiver who was solid as a starter, a four-year, $14 million extension during midseason. Does that sound about right?

“You’ve got to talk to my agent,” Robinson said with a laugh.

I think 99% of fans would love that too. Amazing how Robinson can come in and do so well while Bryant still doesn't know his head from his ass. I see why he fell. We need to quit drafting these players. It looks like we're gonna get burned.

I still think Dwayne Harris will prove to be a very good #3 receiver, but I'd be all over re-signing Robinson.

As an aside... do you guys realize the Chargers elected to keep Crayton over Robinson?

Robisnon is like a talented Crayton. Guy just always seems to be open.

The Crayton trade gets better and better.

It always amazes me how players can go from on the street to playing at a Pro Bowl level with a new team and new environment.

Somebody is going to pay him if we don't. Better believe if he hits free agency, the Redskins will go after him.

Yep. We need to keep him from hitting free agency so we don't get into a bidding war with someone like them or the Eagles.

I didn't think about the Eagles, but with things up in the air with Jackson, I see them going after Robinson and then trading Jackson for a pick. Both those teams would go after Robinson for no other reason but to hurt the Cowboys; him being a good player is just an added benefit.

Made himself alot of money this year. Hopefully its Jones that gives him the money.

If Jones were smart he'd try and lock him up today, but Robinson's agent is probably smart too and wouldnt do a deal just to do a deal. He knows he'll be in demand.

We'd be fools to let Robinson walk. Then again Jerry is our GM.

I never understood why Jerry let everyone walk in the early to mid 90s. Harper, Gant, Stepnoski, James Washington, Stone. There are plenty more.

The cap was extremely low when it kicked in in 1994, and we had just signed Aikman & Emmitt to mega deals. There was no way to keep everyone, we had the most talented and deepest roster in the league by far. From 94-99 no team lost more free agents than we did, but we kept alot of key guys too, it wasnt like they let everyone walk.

We also made some mistakes. Letting Godfrey go was a huge mistake and seeing him destroy our offense that next year in Tennesee was hard to take. Definitely shoulda resigned Harper, although I heard he was talking about leaving in the lockerroom right after the loss to San Francisco. If we could sign Deion to that huge deal, we could have re-signed some of our own players.

Jerry can't take the chance on letting Robinson go. As good as he's playing, plus the troubles we've had finding a reliable third receiver, plus Miles Austin's troubles staying healthiy the last couple of years equals a need to keep him that just can't be ignored.

Harper was a player I really liked until that game vs SF. He played like shit in the game and was actually benched, then after the game when everybody was down and out was seen/heard in the lockerroom talking about how much money he was going to get when he left. Most people dont remember but we actually almost traded Alvin Harper on draft day in 1994, we wanted to mvoe up to get Willie McGinest and had a deal in place with the Rams, but the Pats took McGinest before the Rams got on the clock.

There were only a couple players we let walk that really hurt us. Losing Ken Norton hurt, because Robert Jones was never more than average and plus it made SF a much better defensive team. Jones also hated it that we lost Russell Maryland to Oakland in 96. We lost alot of lockerroom leadership when these two guys left. When we lost Mark Stepnoski we replaced him with Day Donaldson, who although he was older was actually kind of an upgrade. He was so big and physical on the inside compared to Step, and Donaldson was having a tremendous year in 1995 before breaking his leg early in December that year. It was a big hit to the OL too.

And other than a few exceptions, almost all the guys that left never duplicated the success they had in Dallas elsewhere, including Harper, who was a mega bust in Tampa.

Barring some ungodly contract demand no way you let the guy walk. We got lucky and got him back a second time. This team would be staring at the underside of .500 without him. Nothing wrong with keeping a deep stable group of wideouts. Just ask the Packers.

We don't need to resign Robinson. Tony has made a number of receivers look good and win games for us. Holley and Ogletree both have made plays for us. If we're spending money, it needs to be on defense.

You kinda make a good point here.
