By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

Almost every time Jerry Jones speaks about the Cowboys’ roster, it sounds like spin control at this point.

That certainly was the case when he discussed his confidence in the safeties on the Cowboys’ roster during last week’s conference call with season-ticket holders.

“I think we’re in good shape at safety,” Jones said.

Yes, Jones is well aware that the projected starting safeties have a combined four NFL starts. Those are all by Barry Church, who is thought highly enough at Valley Ranch to receive a four-year, $9 million deal (plus $3.4 million in incentives) after suffering a torn Achilles tendon early last season.

Jones also seems just about ready to put Matt Johnson, who missed all of his rookie season due to hamstring problems and other injuries, in the Ring of Honor.

“I don’t know when I’ve ever seen a player impress our staff without having played in a ballgame any more than Matt Johnson,” Jones gushed.

The Cowboys’ other alternatives at safety: third-round pick J.J. Wilcox, who played offense until his senior year at Georgia Southern; nine-year veteran Will Allen, who didn’t start for the Buccaneers in Monte Kiffin’s last two seasons with Tampa Bay; and three-year vet Danny McCray, who was forced to play enough safety last season to confirm that he’s best suited to stick to special teams.

“I think we’ve really given ourselves a lot of potential,” Jones said. “The coaches told me [with] the scheme, ‘Don’t worry as much about range.’ I said, ‘What? Don’t worry as much about range?’

“(Kiffin) said, ‘No, our scheme gives them the angles. It gives them the angles. Get us somebody that is young. Don’t worry as much about experience as you have in the past. Get us some young players with instincts and let us go from there with them.’”

Believe it or not, that actually passes the smell test, given Kiffin’s Tampa Bay track record.

When Kiffin arrived in Tampa in 1996, the Bucs had precious little experience at safety. Their strong safety had six starts in the previous three seasons of his NFL career. Their free safety started three games as a rookie the previous year.

John Lynch, a third-round pick in 1993, ended up establishing himself as one of the elite strong safeties in NFL history, playing in nine Pro Bowls. The Bucs filled free safety with a handful of mid-round picks and low-priced free agents during Lynch’s Tampa Bay tenure, finishing top 10 in both major defensive categories every year but Lynch’s first full season as a starter, when they were 11th in yards allowed.

Kiffin’s history of making the most out of medium-level investments at safety offers no guarantees, of course. It does, however, provide legitimate proof for those inside Valley Ranch who insist that there’s no need to panic about the Cowboys’ safety situation.

Hey I've got an idea lets compare a third round prospect from a big time program who, really, played a position in a way that is basically irrellevant today to our collection of undrafted free agent or small school prospects who collectively has just a hair more playing time than I do in the NFL.

I'm really getting fucking tired of the idiot that does the scouting for safeties on this team.

SHIT! Damn kiss of death!

At least to Johnson's credit, he did play the position throughout his college career and is not a convert.

Seriously, if you would have told me we would come through free agency and the draft with us returning 4/5th of our offensive line, no new defensive linemen, and still have a giant question mark at Safety, I would have chalked it up to extreme Jerry bashing. Yet, here we are.

He can't be this stupid..can he?

It's pretty sad, isn't it?

We're basically going into next season with the exact same holes we had last season.

Convenient that while talking about Kiffin's history there is no mention of his 2012 USC Defense, statistically the worst in Trojan history. Chip Kelly's team racked up 700 plus yards on SC last year. Good thing there are no spread and zone option read offenses in the NFL, oh wait.

In 2011 when USC's defense struggled, Kiffin threw every one of his players under the bus, stating the scheme was too complicated. In 2012, when the defense was even worse, he resigned to save his son's job. Jerry looks at this and thinks he's the guy to run our defense?

Look, I want to coach defense one day and I'm a big fan of Kiffin.....15 years ago. He was innovative and ran one of the better defenses in league history not named the 85 Bears. Why Jerry thinks he was the man for the job now is a mystery.

If we don't make the playoffs this year I want our record to be bad. As in 4-12 or 5-11 bad.

Fuck. Jerry.

As long as we have Romo we will always finish around 8 and 8 or better.

Unfortunately, as long as we have Jerry as GM ,we will always finish right around 8 and 8.

Wouldn't change anything.

It might cause him to hire a real coach and step back. This time when the real coach retired or moved on, he'd be too old to step back in and screw things up.

Short of an actual playoff victory, I think Garrett is done. Jerry is already impatient and came very close to moving on this year (allegedly).

He's paying him to "walk around" now, which is absurd. Only Jerry would pay someone $3 million to walk around. He can't call plays. He can't gameplan. He can walk around though.

Yeah, the only safety who really couldn't make it under Kiffin was.........WILL ALLEN!

I don't think it's really that bleak. The Tampa 2 emerged from repairing a flawed approach of the Bucs defense over time. The USC defense seems to be taking a scheme that was was a result of progressive synthesis in Tampa, and just generically and impulsively applying the formula to the players without a trial and error adjusted development. The problem with that is there is no element of surprise and yet, a tremendous amount of game tape on the Kiffin/Tampa style from the Bucs.

My thought, or perhaps hope, is that the Kiffin 4-3 Over/under is a remedy to the lack of pressure Dallas has been getting from their front four at a time where the DL has prime players to attack (at least with Spencer and Ware); but more importantly, I think Kiffin's scheme offers a less chaotic and intelligent method for coverage in the defensive secondary. Giving the DBs a few steps closer and a little more play in front of them, may equal the forced mistakes or the sacks that were lacking in the previous 2 years.

I think the simplicity will unshackle the aggressiveness and speed of the defensive talent overall. Not as much because Kiffin is installing his scheme, but because I see this style of defense as a progressive remedy to what ails the Dallas defensive secondary.

I hope you're right. Having personally watched every snap of USC football the last few years I just don't think Kiffin can adjust to the multiple looks and fats pace of a spread offense. He's even admitted to that.

The Front 4 has to create pressure, you are right. They have to be able to beat their man one-on-one and outside of Ware and occasionally Ratliff, not sure we have the guys for that. Hatcher and Lissemore are space-takers. Spencer rushes too deep too often for my liking and makes most of his plays by being relentless, staying at it.

The Safeties also have to be able to diagnose the play very quickly and cover a lot of ground. That terrifies me. Johnson was a very good player amongst lower caliber guys in college. Wilcox is as raw as they come. Will Allen is a JAG and Church has to get healthy.

This defense also requires Corners to be physical, aggressive tacklers. No problem with Carr but don't think Claiborne is that kind of player.

I have all of the faith in the world in our linebackers.

We ran the 3-4 wrong for years so it doesn't surprise me that Jerry will take a different path to running the Tampa 2 here. It's so important for him to be unconventional. I wish it was more important to win.

I made a similar comment at the Zone last offseason immediately after the 2011 season ended. We were talking about Costa, and everyone was one hundred percent certain center would be addressed. To suggest otherwise was regarded as Jerry bashing.

And sure enough, the Cowboys rolled with Costa.

I really trust Cmd's opinion on Kiffins D...IMO, that's this teams biggest issue..sure, the OL still sucks..but if this defense sucks, this team is in big trouble...if Kiffin can get this defense to play at a high level, IMO, that will make the biggest difference on this season.
