Question: Why do so many people seem to have such a high opinion of Rob Ryan's ability as a defensive coordinator? Collectively, his defensive squads have had one good year (when Oakland's defense ranked 3rd overall). Otherwise, his defenses have ranked in the middle or lower half of the league.

Jean-Jacques Taylor: You raise a good point. Most folks, I believe, are judging him on his pedigree since his father and brother are considered terrific defensive minds. They’re also projecting how his style will fit with the Cowboys’ personnel. There’s a hope that his penchant for an aggressive, attacking defensive style will make DeMarcus Ware even more effective, while having a positive effect on Anthony Spencer. Ryan has been the coordinator in Oakland and Cleveland. Neither one of those clubs has ever been considered blessed with a massive amount of defensive talent. We believe the Cowboys underachieved on defense. We’ve seen Spencer and Jenkins play well, which is what gives you hope for the Cowboys next season. This team has some nice pieces on defense, and the belief in the organization is that Ryan can unlock the best this defense has to offer.
