Report: 'Cowboys will figure out a way to get Manziel'

Johnny Manziel has been one of the favorites in the discussion of what the Houston Texans will do with the No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick.

But the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner might end up with the other team in Texas.

According to a report by ESPNCleveland.com, CBS Sports NFL announcer Jim Nantz says he has heard that the Cowboys will do whatever it takes to bring Johnny Football to Dallas.

"I've heard this rumor for a month -- the Cowboys will figure out a way to get Manziel," Nantz told ESPNCleveland.com. "Wherever Manziel goes, there is going to be more clamoring about Johnny Manziel than there would be about Blake Bortles going No. 1 or (Jadeveon) Clowney going No. 1, or anyone else. This is a guy that there's just a tremendous interest in everything he does."

There's been talk all offseason about the Cowboys' possible interest in the Manziel, but it didn't seem likely with Dallas picking 16th in the draft and quarterback Tony Romo getting a six-year, $108 million contract extension last year.

The Cowboys also signed former Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden to a two-year deal last month.

But you never know what Jerry Jones will do despite dismissing rumors about Manziel earlier this year.

"No doubt in my mind [Manziel] is going to be an outstanding NFL football player," Jones said on KRLD-FM 105.3 The Fan. "But we have Tony Romo, and Tony Romo is our ticket."

Manziel has met with Jones this offseason and said playing for the Cowboys would be a dream come true.

"Growing up a Cowboy fan ... I was born at halftime of a Cowboys game," Manziel told the Fort Worth Star Telegram in February. "That would almost be a folktale in the correct direction."

Since my fandom is dying, I want this to happen. I really do

I want Jerry to die without ever winning another SB, and drafting Manzel will push us farther away.

Jerry's ultimate FU to me would be sending a DraftDay movie deal (three #1's) for the top pick and taking Manziel.

That would about do it.

I think the Cowboys can get Manziel and it wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg either. Trade with the Vikings for the 8th spot. Probably would take a 2nd rounder to do it.

If he got that far and the Vikes didn't take him, he'd probably get to us at 16 unless someone else traded up for him.

I think the key is if they really wanted him. I think after the top 7 are gone Manziel becomes a value pick. Titans or Rams could be possible. Who knows, there is so much speculation.

Before i saw the rumor about Mo on here, i was just thinking about how the Cowboys could get ammo to move up and i was just thinking about trading Mo or maybe Carter.

If we are going to dump a talented young veteran, I'd prefer it be Carter at this point. He's in the last yr of his contract anyway and plays a position where it shouldn't be overly hard to replace him.

I do think we'll try to shop him around if they spend an early pick on a WOLB (Shazier, Telvin Smith, Kirksey maybe) or if they drafted someone like Carl Bradford, maybe he plays SOLB and they move Holloman over to WOLB.

Claiborne has only been here two yrs and was hurt for a lot of his 2nd one. He has upside and a very manageable cap situation.

I doubt we get rid of anyone, but I can see us trading picks to move up if Manziel becomes available.

Yeah, mortgage the future to get Manziel. SMH

We have way too many holes to make a trade deal like that. Manziel will be gone in the top 5 anyways. That's another RG3 deal. Not happening.

It would almost be really funny if Manziel is there at 16 but we trade down and don't take him, then he's on the board when our pick comes up again and we pass on him for another player.

After the ridiculous hoopla over him, seeing him in that draft room and waiting till the 2nd rd to hear his name called would be entertaining.

I'd say there's a 90% chance he's taken in the first 10 picks and no chance he makes it out of the first round.

[h=1]Staubach: Manziel not a fit for Cowboys[/h]April, 28, 2014 Apr 28

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com
IRVING, Texas -- Roger Staubach has been a fan of Tony Romo since the beginning. He also believes Johnny Manziel will have a long career in the NFL.

But the Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame quarterback does not want to see Romo and Manziel on the same team.

Recent talk has the Cowboys interested in picking up Manziel in the first round of next week's draft, ranging from doing anything they can to get him to hoping that he would fall close to the 16th pick. On 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Monday, executive vice president Stephen Jones said any interest in Manziel is "purely speculation,” and that the team has yet to rate the quarterback position as a group.

Romo, who turned 34 last week, is coming off his second back surgery in less than a year, but he has been involved in the offseason conditioning program in the last two weeks and is expected to be ready for on-field work when Phase 2 of the offseason begins.

"I try to make people understand that if you brought Tom Brady here last year or Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck, it's a team effort and you need a solid defense or you're going to be 8-8,” Staubach said. "If we had a really good defense we would've been 11-5 easily, I think. I hope (Romo) has three, four more years left in him. The people that really understand football understand how good he is but those with second opinions would be screaming for Manziel all the time.

"I think Manziel has got great instincts. I think he'll be a fine player, but I don't think you want a Manziel when you have a franchise quarterback. Jerry has paid (Romo) as a franchise. I think Tony is that. He's not the reason we're 8-8.That's my feeling.”

To Staubach, a quarterback controversy is the quickest way to hurt a team.

In 1971, coach Tom Landry had Staubach and Craig Morton alternating series before settling on Staubach, and the Cowboys went on to win their first Super Bowl.

"We probably had half of the people want Craig on the field and half of them wanted me, and even teammates might've felt the same if you polled the team early in the year when Craig and I were going back and forth,” Staubach said. "Whoever's going to be the quarterback, you need a quarterback that's the leader and the person in place. Coach, God love him, but that kind of divided the team. You don't want to divide the team on your quarterback. That would be wherever Manziel goes. He's going to get a chance to be a starter. That's what he wants. I think he deserves that. I think he's got that starting quarterback talent.”

Staubach's always in the tank for whoever the starting QB is, like he was for Henson and Hutch. When we're scrambling to find a starter two years from now, blame the "let's make life for Tony as comfortable as possible" brigade.

I have no doubt Staubach loves the franchise and speaks positively whenever he can, but I don't remember him gushing over Steve Pelluer or Q Bong
