Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was interviewed on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday to discuss the team and their loss to the Eagles. Here are some highlights:
In the way the Rangers lost Cliff Lee, whats the trade that you'll remember as the one that got away? What player did you have your heart set on that you didn't get?
You know, obviously, I started thinking about the ones we got; Deion [Sanders], of course, was a very significant sign for us as a free agent and that was a big plus. I really don't know that we have the same circumstances that I can remember on a free agent getting away. We've had some disappointments in the draft; we had some guys that we really had our eyes on in the draft and had them picked before us but I really can't point to one.
What are your thoughts on the game against the Eagles? The Cowboys were cruising and the secondary fell through. Is this something you can fix or do you just need to go out and get new players?
Well, I sure thought that at the end of the game, I was really proud of this team for, basically, responding to adversity throughout the game as we all were but I thought at the end of the game, we could make that stop. I was really surprised; I don't know that we were tired. A lot of times, at the end of a game, you can say your defense has been out there a long time but we ran about 55 defensive plays and certainly everybody's tired at the game. The offense does have a little advantage right there at the end, usually, if they've been wearing you down. But, we looked at the tape yesterday and it was a player here, a player there; it wasn't one player but our ability there to not stop the run was, again, surprising. I really thought that we could make the stop; we had done that early in the ball game and I was surprised at the way they did it: with their running game as opposed to [Michael] Vick running the option.
Is it really that surprising when this team's defense is on pace to allow the most points in franchise history?
I know that going into the season, we really thought that one of the most significant strengths of this team would be our defense. I thought we could do it though pressure; ultimately, we didn't get it and we've had to revisit what we're doing back in the secondary. All of that makes for...overall, certainly, that last part of the ball game yesterday or day before yesterday was disappointing but all year long, I thought our defense would be a bigger contributor to our success.
When you watch tape, I'm sure you grade your players but do you also grade your coaches? How did they do this past week?
Yes, I do. I certainly do. Well, let me just say this: I don't share what I grade the coaches, individually or as a group. But I do that. We have a process where we grade each individual player and I do it from three or four ways. We have our scouts independently look at how the game is run or we have our scouts look at how we're prepared by virtue of evaluating each of the players and whether or not they did what we had tried to do in the game plan. And, in a sense, that grades your coaches as well. But that is a big part of what I do.
Are you happy with how the coaches are grading out? Is Jason Garrett meeting your expectations?
I'm pleased. I'm not surprised, but I'm pleased with what the staff is doing and we've got quite a challenge, for the most part. This is the same staff that we've had all year; they're basically doing the same thing. We're missing Wade [Phillips] as the coordinator on defense but apart from that we've just got the same people doing more things. And the answer is yes, I'm pleased with where we're doing with out staff.
So in what ways do you miss Wade on defense?
Well, again, just in numbers and in time. We did not add another coach and so what we were doing with Wade, Paul [Pasqualoni] is having to do what he was doing plus what Wade was doing as a coordinator. Just as Jason is having to do the head coaching things that he does as well as the offensive coordinator.
The Cowboys last year had one of the top defenses in the league. So you have to be scratching your head wondering what happened this year, right?
I'll say it a different way here: I had counted on this defense just as you should if you're going to get to a high level of success. You got to count on your defense and overall this year we have not made it.
Has there been a change in the defense that is causing the Cowboys to finally get takeaways?
No, I think the kinds of things that we done...you might say...I'm going to back up there. I think we're facing, in the secondary, the quarterback more. We've got our back to the quarterback less. Usually, that's because you're playing more zone rather than man so that I think, in general, you get more turnovers if you're in zone. But you get more sacks or the attempt...the theory is that if you get the kind of pass rush that you want and you man then, then you probably get the chance to get more sacks but that's pretty generic statement there and I don't know that you want to hang your hat on that. But I think we're getting more turnovers because we're facing the quarterback.
Rumor has it that Bill Cowher isn't on your list of possible coaches because you aren't ready to give up your power. What is your response?
Let me just say this: I'm doing the same thing and have the same "power" today that I've had since I bought the Cowboys and that is ultimate decision on what we do here and that's just the way that it is. But I wouldn't even go there with any coach's name but they certainly, whoever would make that statement about my short list, doesn't know...I'm not so sure that candidly, there isn't a coach out here that has the potential to coach that's not on my list at all times. And you should keep that idea or those thoughts in your mind at all times. No matter where you are.
There has been some outrage with Tashard Choice asking Michael Vick for an autograph. Did you address that? Is it even an issue?
Well, let me put it like this: he's one of the hardest workers we got and one of the most conscientious. And so, I'm cutting him some slack there. I don't even want to discuss that as much as I want to say that in his particular case, he deserves a break, one way or the other, on his decision but he gets the benefit of the doubt. He's a hard worker.
