IRVING, Texas -- Owner/general manager Jerry Jones stopped just short of saying Kyle Wilber had claimed the starting job at strong side linebacker.

However, Jones gushed about Wilber’s performance in two games filling in for Justin Durant, who has been sidelined by a hamstring strain.

“If you [are injured] and you’re the starter, then you’re supposed to be the starter when you get back. So much for that. I’m excited about Wilber as a player, as an asset for the Cowboys.”

Wilber, a fourth-round pick in 2012, moved from outside linebacker to defensive end when the Cowboys switched to a 4-3 scheme in the offseason. He was moved back to outside linebacker out of necessity after Sean Lee and Durant suffered hamstring strains in the Week 10 loss to the Saints and excelled in the Cowboys’ two wins since.

“He was just so impressive and he’s come such a long way,” Jones said. “He really might have him placed in a place where he can excel. He’s always had a lot of natural ability.”

Jones said Lee will play Monday night against the Chicago Bears. He certainly made it sound as if Wilber would line up next to Lee, regardless of Durant’s status.

“He’s going to be a big factor for us on defense,” Jones said of Wilber. “But I wouldn’t want to say who’s actually the starter.”

Uh, no. He didn't learn a thing from Jimmy.

And then 2 years of shitty play before he's relased and then we have 3 years of dead money at $8 mil per year.

He should, he's played really well. Who knows if he has some weakness teams will find with more tape on him, but so far he looks pretty good there.

Makes you wonder why it took so long to try him there instead of end, where he's really small.

It took someone getting hurt. The starters have their jobs until they get hurt. Then it takes an act of God to keep them on the bench when they're healthy again.

Soapbox time but again how clueless is this organization

We draft him and tell him he's 3-4 OLB. Then, we change schemes and tell him he's a 4-3 DE. Turns out he's a decent 4-3 OLB. Where's the coaching? Where's the qualified football evaluation?

I think it is related to how the team drafted for a 3-4 defense for years and then realized they were really better suited to a 4-3. Makes perfect sense.

I do think this is his best position, but this coaching staff really struggles to put players in a position to succeed. Glad we waited until the 12th game to figure out how to use Dunbar.

Seriously. They were thinking like regular joe fans here:

'OK, he's a DE in college, but projects to OLB in a 3-4; it only makes sense to move him back to DE in a 4-3'

Stupid.

I'm okay with this. Durant was a placeholder anyway. Wilbz had looked good so far. Had a really nice game against the giants. I wish Holloman would get healthy so we can see a bit of what we have in him.
