Is Martellus Bennett finally ready to break out?

Is Martellus Bennett finally ready to break out?
August, 5, 2011

By Tim MacMahon
SAN ANTONIO – Martellus Bennett making plays in the Alamodome is nothing new.

The big tight end was the star of training camp two years ago, seeming to make at least one spectacular catcher per practice. That prompted anticipation that he was on the verge of blossoming into a major weapon for the Cowboys’ passing game.

In the two seasons since then, Bennett has scored a grand total of zero touchdowns.

Considering that, perhaps we should be careful pumping up too much optimism about Bennett’s potential. However, it’s worth noting that Bennett was one of the first names out of Jason Garrett’s mouth when the head coach/offensive coordinator singled out players for praise due to their camp performance.

Garrett pointed out that Bennett has shown flashes the last two seasons. Bennett has established himself as a good run blocker, but his three-year totals of 68 catches for 702 yards and four touchdowns are disappointing for a tight end with so much talent.

There’s no reason a tight end with the 6-6, 275-pound Bennett’s blend of size, quickness and acrobatic ability shouldn’t be a dynamic force, especially down the middle of the field and in the red zone. However, the lack of opportunities indicates that Bennett didn’t fully earn the trust of Garrett and quarterback Tony Romo in his first three seasons.

“The big thing for guys is to be a consistent, dependable player – play in and play out, day in and day out, game in and game out,” Garrett said. “He’s clearly shown that he’s doing that better and better, more and more. I thought he made great strides last year in the role he was given. Hopefully, we can expand that role.”

Maybe, just maybe, Bennett is finally primed for a breakout season. Better late than never.

No. He's a camp tease.

Jon Phillips is the 2nd best TE on the roster.

Yes. Bennett is going to break out this year. Break out as much as a 2nd TE can. He'll make a number of significant plays for us this year. More than Phillips.

Look for Bennett to be especially effective against the Eagles this year. Those will likely be his two best games.

right now he's our best "3rd WR" option. Ogletree doesn't really impress me. I'd rather see Bennett motion and split out wide. Cornerbacks are too little and most linebackers can't hang with his athleticism.

You beat me to it. And that's not a bad option having Bennett as a "3rd WR". I have a problem with the title of the thread. How was Bennett supposed to have "broken out", when you had players like T.O., Witten, Roy, Crayton, Miles, and then Dez?

why not take both (players) ?

We have both, so I'll take it.

I just get tired of the early hype on Bennet every year. He's a good blocker, but outside of his rookie year, he hasn't done shit as a pass catcher. With his limited reps in 2009, I believe he led the team in drops. Then you look at the less skilled guy in Phillips, who in his limited reps has been much more dependable, well he can block too.

And here I thought I was the only one who felt this way.

I mean I hope Bennett gets it this year, but I too am sick of waiting every year.

Now, let the Bennett ball washer's begin to spew....

You're tired of the hype on Bennett, so in response you hype up Phillips? Brilliant. Expalin how he hasn't done shit as a pass catcher, when he's been about 5th or 6th in the passing option? He had players like T.O., Roy, Crayton and Witten ahead of him in 2009, and then in 2010, he had Austin, Bryant, Roy, and Witten still. How many looks do you think he's going to get? If Phillips was in the same situation, he wouldn't fare any better.

I guarantee you 32 NFL GMs would take Bennett over Phillips, even if he didn't have the two bad legs.

You keep saying he's more "dependable", but not surprisingly do not elaborate. And where's your rpoof he led the team in drops?

I could see it happening. Not necessarily "breaking out", but have a pretty damn good year. Reason being mostly because you can't feed 450+ passes just to Witten, Austin and Dez. That and the probably naive assumption that at some point maturity will develop.

You the one that is ballwashing, sock puppet. Ballwashing for an inferior player.

Oh really? So tell me LAZHORUS LOGAN, what has Bennett done that Phillips hasn't? Besides run his big phucking mouth?
