Is Martellus Bennett finally ready to break out?
Is Martellus Bennett finally ready to break out?

SAN ANTONIO – Martellus Bennett making plays in the Alamodome is nothing new.
The big tight end was the star of training camp two years ago, seeming to make at least one spectacular catcher per practice. That prompted anticipation that he was on the verge of blossoming into a major weapon for the Cowboys’ passing game.
In the two seasons since then, Bennett has scored a grand total of zero touchdowns.
Considering that, perhaps we should be careful pumping up too much optimism about Bennett’s potential. However, it’s worth noting that Bennett was one of the first names out of Jason Garrett’s mouth when the head coach/offensive coordinator singled out players for praise due to their camp performance.
Garrett pointed out that Bennett has shown flashes the last two seasons. Bennett has established himself as a good run blocker, but his three-year totals of 68 catches for 702 yards and four touchdowns are disappointing for a tight end with so much talent.
There’s no reason a tight end with the 6-6, 275-pound Bennett’s blend of size, quickness and acrobatic ability shouldn’t be a dynamic force, especially down the middle of the field and in the red zone. However, the lack of opportunities indicates that Bennett didn’t fully earn the trust of Garrett and quarterback Tony Romo in his first three seasons.
“The big thing for guys is to be a consistent, dependable player – play in and play out, day in and day out, game in and game out,” Garrett said. “He’s clearly shown that he’s doing that better and better, more and more. I thought he made great strides last year in the role he was given. Hopefully, we can expand that role.”
Maybe, just maybe, Bennett is finally primed for a breakout season. Better late than never.
